Description
UCThesis is a LyX layout and LaTeX class for creating thesis documents. As of April 2012 this layout complies with dissertation formatting requirements of the Graduate Division at UC Berkeley(approve sites).

Download and Installation

1. Download UCThesisForLyx.zip 2. Unpack the zip file. It will contain two folders, the configuration files in ..\Configuration Files and an example thesis in ..\example 3. Add ucthesisLyx class files to MiKTEX. Windows OS - Copy the ..\Configuration Files\ucthesisLyx folder to the MiKTEX program directory ..\MiKTEX x.x\tex\latex where x.x is the MiKTEX version installed. Mac OS - Copy the ../Configuration Files/ucthesisLyx folder to ~/Library/texmf/tex/latex. Note: In Mac OS Lion the Library folder is hidden by default. It can be accessed by holding down the Option key when clicking the Go menu in Finder- the Library icon will appear as a menu option. Note: If the ~/Library/texmf/tex/latex directory does not exist, it can be created by entering the following command at terminal mkdir -p ~/Library/texmf/tex/latex 4. Update MiKTEX (Windows) or MacTex (MacOS) to include the ucthesisLyx class Windows OS - Open the MiKTEX Settings Manager located at Start>Programs>MiKTEX x.x>Maintenance (Admin). Under the General Tab select Refresh FNDB. This will add the ucthesisLyx folder to MiKTEX.

Mac OS - Updates automatically 5. Add the ucthesisLyx.layout file to LyX 1. Copy ucthesisLyx.layout to the LYX layouts folder Windows OS - Copy ucthesisLyx.layout to ..\LyXx.x\Resources\layouts where x.x is the version of LyX installed. Mac OS - Copy ucthesisLyx.layout to /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/layouts 2. Open Lyx 3. Reconfigure the application by selecting LyX Tools > Reconfigure 4. Restart LyX

Example Thesis
The ..\example folder contains an example thesis which can be used as a template for writing. The files included in this template are: Thesis.lyx The main LyX document. Links to all the front matter, chapters, appendices, and bibliography frontmatter.tex Set title, author, degree information, committee members preface.tex Content for preface acknowledge.tex Text for acknowledgements page notation.tex Document for listing the notation and symbols used in the thesis abstract.tex Text for abstract macros.tex File to save any LaTeX macros you will be using the thesis Folder - Appendices Contains the appendices, each appendix is an individual document Folder - Bibliography Contains the BibTex files Folder - Chapters Contains the individual chapters. Includes a subfolder images for images
