1.0 INTRODUCTION

Meaning of open source

Open source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study, change and improve the software. THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM (OS) Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the software. Some open source licenses meet the requirements of the Open Source Definition. Some open source software is available within the public domain. Open source software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Opensource software is the most prominent example of open-source development and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated content or (legally defined) open content movements. The Open Source Definition is used by the Open SourceInitiativeto determine whether a Software license can be considered open source. The definition was based on the Debian Free Software Guidelines, written and adapted primarily by Bruce Perens. Perens did not base his writing on the "four freedoms" of Free Software from the Free Software Foundation, which were only widely available later.

2.0 Example of open source OS 2.1 LINUX

Linux refers to the family of Unix-like computer operating systems using the Linux kernel. Linux can be installed on a wide variety of computer hardware, ranging from mobile phones, tablet computers and video is a game consoles, system, to mainframes and and runs the 10

supercomputers Linux

leading server operating

fastest supercomputers in the world. The development of Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software collaboration; typically all the underlying source code can be used, freely modified, and redistributed, both commercially and non-commercially, by anyone under licenses such as the GNU General Public License. Typically Linux is packaged in a format known as a Linux distribution for desktop and server use. Some popular mainstream Linux distributions include Debian , Fedora and openSUSE. Linux distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting utilities and libraries to fulfill the distribution's intended use.

2.2 NetBSD

NetBSD is a freely available open source version of the Unix derivative Berkeley Software Distrubution (BSD) computer operating system. It was the second open source BSD descendant to be formally released, after 386BSD and continues to be actively developed. The NetBSD project is primarily focused on high quality design, stability and

performance of the system. Due to convenient license and portability, NetBSD is often used in embedded system.

2.3 OpenBSD

OpenBSD is a Unix-like computer operating system descended from Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD), a Unix derivative developed at the University of California, Berkeley. It was forked from NetBSD by project leader Theo de Raadt in late 1995. The project is widely known for the developers' insistence on open source code and quality documentation, uncompromising position on software licensing, and focus on security and code correctness. The project is coordinated from de Raadt's home in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Its logo and mascot is a pufferfish named Puffy. OpenBSD includes a number of security features absent or optional in other operating systems, and has a tradition in which developers audit the source code for software bugs and security problems. The project maintains strict policies on licensing and prefers the opensource BSD licence and its variants in the past this has led to a comprehensive license audit and moves to remove or replace code under licences found less acceptable.

3.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE 3.1 Meaning of Open Source Application Software
Application software, also known as an application or an "app", is computer software designed to help the user to perform singular or multiple related specific tasks. It helps to solve problems in the real world. Examples include enterprise software ,accounting software, office suites, graphics software, and media players. Application software is contrasted with system software and middleware, which manage and integrate a computer's capabilities, but typically do not directly apply them in the performance of tasks that benefit the user. A simple, if imperfect, analogy in the world of hardware would be the relationship of an electric light bulb to an electric power generation plant. The power station merely generates electricity, not itself of any real use until harnessed to an application like the electric light that performs a service that benefits the user.

3.2 Example of open software source application 3.2.1 MOZILLA FIREFOX

Mozilla Firefox is a free and open source web browser descended from the Mozilla Application Suite and managed by Mozilla Corporation. As of February 2011, Firefox is the second most widely used browser with approximately 30% of worldwide usage share of web browsers The browser has had particular success in Germany where it is the most popular browser with 60% usage. To display web pages, Firefox uses the Gecko layout engine, which implements most current web standards in addition to several features which are intended to anticipate likely additions to the standards. The latest Firefox features include tabbed browsing, spell checking, incremental find, live bookmarking, a download manager, prvatebrowsing, location-aware browsing (also known as "geolocation") based exclusively on a Google service and an integrated search system that uses Google by default in most localizations. Functions can be added through extensions,

created by third-party developers of which there is a wide selection, a feature that has attracted many of Firefox's users

3.2.2 OpenOffice.org

OpenOffice.org, commonly known as OOo or OpenOffice, is an open-source application suite whose main components are for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, and databases. It is available for a number of different computer operating systems, is distributed as free software and is written using its own GUI toolkit. It supports the ISO/IEC standard OpenDocument Format (ODF) for data interchange as its default file format, as well as Microsoft Office formats among others. As of November 2009, OpenOffice.org supports over 110 languages. As free software, users are free to download, modify, use and distribute OpenOffice.org. OpenOffice.org originated as StarOffice an office suite developed by StarDivision and acquired by Sun Microsystems in August 1999. The source code of the suite was released in July 2000 with the aim of reducing the dominant market share of Microsoft Office by providing a free and open alternative; later versions of StarOffice are based upon OpenOffice.org with additional proprietary componentsThe OpenOffice.org project is primarily sponsored by Oracle Corporation (having acquired Sun Microsystems). Other major corporate contributors include Novell, Red Hat, IBM, Google and others.

5.0 PERSASIVE COMPUTING 5.1 MEANING OF PERVASIE COMPUTING

The trend towards an information environment in which users have access to ICTs throughout the environment. This trend is particularly associated with the growth of wireless technologies that allow users to access online information and services remotely and synchronise data between different computers.

5.2 Examples of pervasie computing

Example 1: SMART TAG -Is an electronic device that can be used at all highways at Malaysia Example 2 : HCI(Human-computer Interaction) -Humancomputer interaction (HCI) is the study, planning and design of the interaction between people(users) and computers. It is often regarded as the intersection of computer sciene, behavioral scienes, design, and several others fields of study

6.0 CONCLUSION
Technology has integrated in our everyday life. Computer is a machine with software and hardware to perform specific functions. As a computer user, we need to appreciate and cannot misuse the computer.
