Rev. Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Eze 2:1-5, 2 Cor 12:2-10, Mark 6:1-13 July 8, 2012 Ordinary Time 6 In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Brothers and sisters, I have good news: We are not perfectand we dont have to be. This might not be new news, but it is certainly good news, especially in a world that tells us, in so many ways, that we should be perfectthat we need to be perfectand that perfection lies just around the corner. Our pursuit of perfection can be exhausting. Ironically, presenting ourselves to the world as perfect can leave us tired and weary...feeling less-than-perfect. Over and over we come up short in our pursuit of perfection. Well, today, we can stop this pursuit, because in Pauls letter to the Corinthians we hear that we simply are not perfectand that we dont need to be! The passage we read in second Corinthians this morning is, if youre like me, a welcome reminder, which offers both a relief and a challenge. But before we go there, lets back up for a second. You might be wondering whats even going on in this passage. You might be wondering how on earth we arrive at the good news of embracing our imperfections by beginning with the testimony of someones experience of the third level of heaven. Some context and background for this passage will help to clarify a few things. Paul is writing to a Corinthian church that is questioning his authority and teachings, because theyre making comparisons between him and other Christian leaders. These other leaders have had visions and profound mystical experiences that seem to set them apart from Paul in terms of leadership, experience and, dare I say, Holiness.

Paul addresses these unfair comparisons with an ironic and sarcastic tone. He writes about a man who went to the third level heaven this reflects a common Jewish belief that heaven has numerous levels and had mystical experiencea visiontoo profound to speak about. The irony is that Paul is writing about himselfthe sarcasm here is that he doesnt believe at all that his experience separates him or somehow places him closer to God than other faithful Christians. Whatever mystical experiences Paul has had dont set him apart from othersthey dont make him closer to God. They may have been life-changing, but whatever experiences he or the other leaders may have had, dont change the fundamental truth of their shared humanness shared frailtyshared brokenness shared weakness. Paul may very well have wanted these experiences to lead to perfection, but they didnt. They didnt because God says, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Gods grace is sufficient for us and Gods power is made perfect in our weaknessin our frailtyin our brokennessin our humanness. Gods powerful love for the world is made perfect in our weakness. If Gods grace is sufficient for usand if Gods love is made perfect in our weakness, then what does it say about us when we listen to the world telling us that we should be perfectthat we need to be perfectthat perfection lies just around the corner? As I mentioned earlier, this passage offers both relief and a challenge. Brothers and sisters, take a breath and sigh a sigh of relief: we are not perfect and we dont have to be. Regardless of what we do, who we are, or what weve done, we are humanwe are imperfect. What is more: God graciously loves us, claims us, and assures us of the unending grace that is sufficient for us because we are human...because we are imperfect. The challenge then is not to hide our imperfection, but rather to embrace it, so that Gods grace can make us whole, can offer us strength, can give us courage. If we were perfect, there would be no need for grace. Thus, we can relax. We can seek to embrace our imperfections, so that we might know Gods sufficient grace in our lives, and it might flow through us to the rest of the world. Amen.

ESPAOL. En el nombre del Creador Redentor y Sustentador, Amen Hermanos y hermanas les tengo buenas nuevas: No somos perfectos. Y no tenemos que serlo. Esto podran no ser nuevas noticias, Pero estas son ciertamente buenas nuevas, especialmente en un mundo que nos dice de muchas maneras que debemos ser perfectos que necesitamos ser perfectos y que la perfeccin se encuentra solo a la vuelta de la esquina. Nuestra bsqueda de la perfeccin puede ser agotadora. Irnicamente, presentarnos al mundo como prefectos puede dejarnos cansados y agotadossintindonos menos que perfectos. Una vez y otra vez nos quedamos cortos en la bsqueda de la perfeccin. Bien, hoy, podemos parar esta bsqueda, porque en la carta de Pablo para Corintios, escuchamos que simplemente no somos perfectos y que no necesitamos serlo! Este pasaje lo lemos en segunda de Corintios esta maana, si eres como yo, un recordatorio de bienvenida, el cual ofrece alivio y desafo. Pero antes de ir all, vamos a retroceder por un segundo. Podras preguntarte que est incluso pasando en este pasaje. Podras estar preguntndote como llegamos a la buena noticia de abrazar nuestras imperfeccionescomenzando con el testimonio de la experiencia de alguien del tercer nivel de los cielos. Algunos contextos y antecedentes de este pasaje ayudaran a aclarar algunas cosas. Pablo est escribiendo a una iglesia de Corintio que est cuestionando su autoridad y enseanzas, porque ellos estn haciendo comparaciones entre ly otros lderes cristianos. Estos otros lderes han tenido visiones y profundas experiencias msticas que parecen los separan de Pablo en trminos de liderazgo, experiencia y me atrevera a decir, Santidad. Pablo se dirige a estas comparaciones injustas con un tono irnico y sarcstico. l escribe sobre un hombre que fue al tercer nivel de los cielos - esto refleja una creencia juda comn de que el cielo tiene muchos niveles - y tuvo una experiencia mstica ... una visin ... demasiado profunda para hablar. La irona es que Pablo est escribiendo sobre s mismo ... el sarcasmo es que l no cree en absoluto que su experiencia le separa o de alguna manera lo sita ms cerca de Dios que los dems fieles cristianos.

Cualquiera de las experiencias msticas que Pablo ha tenido no lo distinguen de los dems... no lo hacen ms cerca de Dios. Es posible que hayan sido un cambio de vida, pero

cualquier experiencia que l o los otros lderes pueden haber tenido, no cambia la verdad fundamental de su humanidad compartida... su fragilidad compartida... su quebrantamiento compartido ... su debilidad compartida. Pablo pudo muy bien haber querido que estas experiencias guiaran a la perfeccin, pero no lo hicieron. No lo hicieron porque Dios dice: "Mi gracia te basta, pues mi poder se perfecciona en la debilidad." La gracia de Dios es suficiente para nosotros y el poder de Dios se perfecciona en nuestra debilidad... en nuestra fragilidad ... en nuestro quebrantamiento ... en nuestra humanidad. Poderoso amor de Dios para el mundo se perfecciona en nuestra debilidad. Si la gracia de Dios es suficiente para nosotros... y si el amor de Dios se perfecciona en nuestra debilidad, entonces, qu dicen de nosotros cuando escuchamos a todo el mundo que nos dice que debemos ser perfectos ... que necesitamos ser perfectos ... que la perfeccin se encuentra solo a la vuelta de la esquina? Como mencion anteriormente, este pasaje ofrece alivio y desafo. Hermanos y hermanas, tomen un respiro y un suspiro un suspiro de alivio: no somos perfectos y no tenemos que serlo. Independientemente de lo que hacemos, quines somos, o lo que hemos hecho, somos humanos... somos imperfectos. Lo que es ms: Dios en su gracia nos ama, nos reclama, y nos asegura que la gracia infinita es suficiente para nosotros... porque somos humanos... porque somos imperfectos. El desafo no es para esconder nuestra imperfeccin, sino para aceptarla, de modo que la gracia de Dios nos puede hacer todo, nos puede ofrecer la fuerza, nos puede dar valor. Si furamos perfectos, no habra necesidad de la gracia. Por lo tanto, podemos relajarnos. Podemos buscar aceptar nuestras imperfecciones, para que podamos conocer la suficiente gracia de Dios en nuestras vidas, y pueda fluir a travs de nosotros para el resto del mundo. Amn.
