Propagation

Effect of propagation delay on processor speed

Assume a processor contain 35 gates. gates If the clock frequency is 500MHz, Clock period = (5*10^8Hz)^-1), ie. 2ns Gate Delay = 1/35*2ns = 57ps. Build power: about 100 Watts, about 100V at 1A, Electric Current I =1A, 1A, Wire diameter: D = 2/10, Radius, R = 0.1cm Mobile electron per cc(for copper, if 1 per atom):Q = 8.5*10^+22 Charge per electron: e = 1.6*10^-19 1 6*10^ 19 EQUATION Cm/sec = 1/(Q*R*R*3.14*e) = 0.23cm/sec = 828cm/hour.

But in the Optical System gate delay is completely eliminated, and hence moves at around 3*10^8m/sec.

Optical Processor
Processor totally avoids the usage of P t t ll id th f electron movement. Implemented using Optical Logic Gates. Vertical polarized light represents a 1 ( p g p (in positive logic). Horizontal one represents a 0 (in positive 0 logic).

Optical Logic Gates

OLGs are implemented using slits p g (vertical and horizontal ones). Slits can be implemented practically using the dextro or the leavo rotatory substances.

Working
p y Input is taken from the memory Horizontal or vertical polarization in accordance to p the input. Information filled beams are passed through the p optic fibers. Processed data is then identified using optical y sensors and stored back into the memory. Control signals are created by the microprogrammed control unit.

The LEDs can be replaced by Laser to Th LED b l db L improve the coherence and the speed of the system which increases the cost by a great factor. Since integrating and mass production are not yet into this field, the size of the field processor is greater than the currently available one. a ailable one
