Presidents Address
Dear Friends and Colleagues, We recently did a series of Executive Roundtable events called The Financial Impact of ALL-IN BIM. The workshop was led by Kenneth H. Stowe, P. E. Director of Construction Business Development for North America for Autodesk, Inc.. The workshop focused on finding the answer to: What is the true financial return on an investment in BIM? It turns out to be a complex question, one that Ken addressed with a systematic approach that addressed 19 benefits in the project lifecycle. It became obvious that for the project communication cultures that have embraced BIM; see larger margins and return on investment. We worked through the numbers with an actual project from the attendees and demonstrated how BIM has produced predicted results of 4 and 5 percent savings on the projectnet. This workshop was a real gem and the feedback we received was that it got everyone thinking about how to maximize the financial benefits of BIM for their team, their company. CADsoft BIM experts are available to meet and build a BIM ROI with your firms for those of you who missed the opportunity to attend. I wanted to touch on one more thing this month, that actually complements the ALL-IN BIM conversations we had Mobile BIM. Mobile BIM is a big buzzword, especially with regards to how building information modeling can be pushed to mobile devices at the jobsite. The new Windows 8 could potentially have a significant impact on mobility for the construction industry, pushing BIM to the field more effectively. Windows 8 will run on high-powered 64-bit desktops as well as lightweight ARM-based tablets. With these devices running Windows, construction companies could potentially run applications such as Revit and Navisworks natively on the devices Windows 8 is speculated to be launched in October of this year, but Microsoft has not announced an official launch date. Windows 8 could make Mobile BIM more of a reality for the construction industry.
