Presidents Address
Dear Friends and Colleagues, A few weeks ago, I was talking with a civil engineer who commented that he was asked by an architecture firm: "Are you BIM ready?" He knew what the benefits of building information modeling (BIM) for building design, and had ideas on how the benefits might extend to civil engineers; never the less, he wasnt sure how to answer the question. As BIM adoption is becoming a standard in architecture and construction, civil engineers are asking What does BIM mean for me. The most immediate benefits of BIM for road and highway design are better designs and increased efficiency and productivity. Because design and construction documentation are dynamically linked, the time needed to produce construction documents is significantly reduced; resulting in more time to evaluate other alternatives and execute design changes. In addition, BIM facilitates roadway optimization by including visualization, simulation, and analysis as part of the design process. I recently read an article about how the firm MWH Global used BIM to help design the Third Set of Locks project for the Panama Cana which is intended to double the canals shipping traffic capacity. MWHs use of a BIM process helped to: Improve the quality of design for the Third Set of Locks project of the Panama Canal Increase productivity and profitability by efficiently managing design changes Facilitate communication with clients and builders through visualizations Ive included below an image from the Third Set of Locks project and a link to the article.

Autodesk Project Vasari Importing Site Images David Metcalf, AEC Technical Consultant Want to see something really easy? Take a look at Project Vasari. Besides looking just like a Revit toolset, it works as a conceptual site studies tool too. In addition, it imports results into Revit.
First off, as anything else related to BIM, you need to set the location. Since we will depend on linking that information in, look at the location showing as Boston MA under the Viewcube. Clicking on this and setting the location will get us started. Read More

Isaac Harper, AEC Technical Consultant I still from time to time get questions (or Opinions) from people about what is the proper way to Create and Insert Blocks when it comes to Layer Zero (0). Some say create all your blocks on layer Zero, some say Dont! The short answer is either way you like it Just understand what is happening in each scenario. Read More
