A Catholic Prayer Meeting of the LIGHT OF JESUS FAMILY July 15, 2012

g Blog: Blessin B! with BS A Night ge 6 See pa

I READ a beautiful article by Jenn Giroux. She said that in the small town of SirokiBrijeg in Croatia (Population: 13,000), not one single divorce has been recorded. Why? I believe its because the old fashioned values are still part of their life and culture. (These old fashioned values are what I will later explain in my talk as Worship or Reverence for God.) And a powerful expression of these old fashioned values is a beautiful twist in their matrimonial ritual. (If your wedding is near, read carefully. You may want to include this for your wedding rites.) In our present wedding ceremony, the priest says at the end of the rites, You may kiss the bride. But in the town of Siroki-Brijeg, the priest says, You may kiss the cross. And both of them kiss Jesus in a crucifix. Let me backtrack a bit to the start of the ceremony. When the bride and groom enter the church, they already carry a crucifix. The first thing the priest does is to bless it. And as the man and the woman say their vows, they are holding on the crosswith the priests stole draped on top of their hands (Note: the stole is the long piece of cloth around the priests neck)

After the vows are said, the couple wont kiss each other. They will kiss the cross. The newlywed couple will then bring home the crucifix and set it on the family altar. Around it, they will establish daily family prayer. That daily family prayer says that Jesus is the center of their family life. When they are blessed, they sing their gratitude around Jesus. When they are in trouble, they kneel at the foot of the cross. When they are fighting, they look at His kindness, His forgiveness, and His selflessness as an example of what they should do. When you marry someone, youre not looking for an ideal partner. Youre looking for a cross. Yes, my wife is my cross. Because loving her isnt convenient. If I wanted to remain comfortable, I shouldnt have gotten married. But I dont want to remain comfortable. I want to remain committed. Yes, she is my cross. My beautiful, lovely, glorious cross. Because she has brought me closer to God and enlarged my capacity to love. May your dreams come true, BO SANCHEZ

LAST WEEK BRO. Bo Sanchez

logged us in to our new series Tagged with his first talk focusing on Relationships. Why is Facebook so big? Because every one of us has a need to be connected and to belong to a group of people. Even 90% of our pain comes from our relationships. Our stress, physical and emotional sicknesses come from problems in our relationships. The good news is God can heal What Is a Miracle? our relationships thus we can be healed from our pain. 1 REV. FR. ALEX BALATBAT Corinthians 13:1-3 says that we expounded on the Gospel are nothing if we do not love. according to Mark 6:1-6 where Jesus said a prophet is despised We all have a deep need for love. God put it in our DNA only in his own country, among because this need pushes us to his own relations and in his Him. Whether we like it or not, own house and he could work the people we love can fail us no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying somehow. But God never fails and only He can fill up our need his hands on them. Fr. Alex said often, we have for love. God is love! Bro. Bo emphasized that a wrong notion about whats a to win in life, we must win in miracle. He said for instance, if a woman who was declared brain love. In every part of our life, we must know how to define dead and was in comatose for a month opened her eyes, we the win. In sports such as say thats a miracle. What if she basketball, every team member did not open her eyes? Does it has to know that he has to mean that there was no blessing, shoot the ball to win. So in no miracle? Fr. Alex said the life, the thing that will make us husband staying by her bedside win is our relationships. This while she was in comatose was even made clear by Jesus thats a miracle a miracle of when He shared the greatest togetherness, the miracle of the commandments: Love God and sacrament of marriage. love others. So we can relate Fr. Alex pointed out that further, Bro. Bo shared four if a persons eyes are fixed on common aspects in life which Jesus and can see His presence need love to be successful: even in dark moments, thats 1. Business. Most a miracle. The Lord is with us businessmen think that the win wherever we are. in business is profit. But its not. Do you want a miracle? Profit is only a side effect of Talk with the person you are at the most important win: good odds with and forgive. Awaken relationship with customers. the miracle in your life. Even in Your business should have raving death, proclaim His presence. fans who can patronize and talk You yourself are a miracle about the product. Its always because God created you in His about loving the customer and the image and likeness. customer loving you back. -- Bella Estrella

2. Family. Parents think they should work endlessly to earn money for their children. Working is good to provide for the familys needs. But at the end of the day, family life is always about being together and spending time to bond with each other. Relationship is the key. 3. Church. Bro. Bo shared that the Feast has been immensely blessed in the past years. Three years ago, there was only one Feast. Now, we have built 94! This is because of the unity that God has blessed the Light of Jesus leaders with. Our leaders have fought along the way, but they were blessed with humility to forgive. Even in our Church, its all about the relationships we build the friendship and the love that we gain along the way.

kindhearted people he had ever met. Bro. Bo then realized that spiritual maturity is better than religious maturity. In the Gospel of John, when the people brought to Jesus an adulterous woman whom they wanted to stone to death, Jesus didnt condemn her. Instead He said, He who has no sin cast the first stone. When the people left, Jesus asked the woman Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?No one, sir, she said. Then neither do I condemn you,Jesus declared. Go now and leave your life of sin. The common misconception about God is that, we should follow His rules first and then He will love us. But Jesus also wants to have a relationship with us! In spite our sins, He will not condemn us because He loves us. And we love because He first loved us. Let us make our life revolve around the most important thing relationships.

4. Christian Life. We have the tendency to complicate Christianity. Even Light of Jesus fifteen years ago was bounded by 24 strict rules which members had to follow. Two things happened that made Bro. Bo rethink the rules: 1) Some religious members turned out to be legalistic and not the best people you wanted to be with. 2) Bro. Bo met people who werent religious at all, but were the most

When Jesus Takes the Wheel

THE first time he attended the Feast with his family, Ruvhel Curray was skeptic about tithing. But one incident changed his mind and heart about giving to the Lord. Unknown to him, his wife put P500 in the Love Offering basket, leaving only P40 in her wallet. On their way home, Ruvhel noticed that his car was about to run out of gas. He asked his wife for money to buy gas and only then did he find out she had only P40 in her wallet. As if to make matters worse, at the same time, their son said he was hungry and asked that they stop and eat in a restaurant. Frantically, his wife scrounged for money in her bag, and she found just enough amount to buy their son a value meal. They continued to drive home, with Ruvhel sweating over

A MOTHER was scheduled to give birth at the delivery room of the Manila Doctors Hospital. Nothing extraordinary. The doctors and nurses went about the routine delivery procedures and at 2 p.m., the mother was already resting at the recovery room, and her baby sleeping, safe and sound, at the nursery. Then it happened. A few minutes after four, the earth shook, the hospital building swayed to and fro, heavy equipment in the nursery moved, the lights flickered. Earthquake! Promptly, the nurses carefully scooped the babies from their bassinets and brought them to a safer place. All the babies were evacuatedexcept the newly born. The baby could not be moved because it was not even two hours old. That baby was me. I was desperately thinking of you, my mother would tell me later, when I was old enough to understand what happened that day. But I was helpless. I couldnt move because my anaesthesia hadnt worn out. My mother related that while everyone scampered for safety, I was there in the nursery sleeping soundly, oblivious of the danger I was in. She said a nurse kindly protected me from falling items, but there was not much else she could do because moving me out of the nursery would be more dangerous for me. Mercifully, after a few agonizing minutes, the earthquake stopped. My mother and I survived one of the worst disasters that the country had suffered. That day, July 16, 1990, at 4:26 p.m., the earthquake, with a 7.8 surface wave magnitude, struck Luzon,

Talk 2: Like Relationships Are Based on Old Fashioned Values

Psalms 139:14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Matthew 7:25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. Personal Reflection and Group Discussion: The foundation of fantastic relationships are old fashioned values of honesty, faithfulness, humility, integrity Can you think of an example of how relationships are so much better with these values?

starting at the epicenter in Nueva Ecija, and stretching up to Metro Manila. The earthquake killed 1,621 persons and damaged P10-billion worth of property. Last Sunday, July 8, the chilling story of my birth raced in my mind again as I listened to the homily of Fr. Alex Balatbat. Fr. Alex said people often wish that they will be blessed with miracles, unaware or unappreciative of miracles already happening for them. We want spectacular miracles such as winning in the Lotto, or a relative getting cured from a dreaded disease, or witnessing a holy apparition. But, Fr. Alex pointed out, every day we are blessed with miraclesthe dawning of a new day, the reconciliation of a wife with her mother-in-law, getting to attend the Feast, receiving Holy Communion... You are a miracle, Fr. Alex stressed, pointing to us attendees. And that very moment, goose bumps crawled all over me. I had heard the story of my birth again and again, but for the first time, I was like, Yes! I am a miracle! Today is July 15. Tomorrow, July 16, I will be 22 years old. Two decades and two years had passed since the Earthquake of 1990. We may never know why over a thousand perished in that disaster while others including my mom and I survived. But Fr. Alex said like life, death is a miracle too. God has His reasons for whatever happens in this world. So now, I can only humbly trust Him that whatever happened to me and what will happen next will always be a miracle.

DAY 3

DAY 4

Listen to Youth Missions Head Obet Cabrillas, cry, if you must in the midst of his touching talk on how God is always there ready to give you a comforting embrace. Go up, up wall climbing and rappelling!

Listen to Bro. JC Libiran tell you that you are Gods powerful champion. You are! And all too sudden, you are at the end of the of Camp Calye. Its difficult to say good-bye, so College campers (below) as well the High School campers simply just wave.

Go up, up wall climbing and rappelling!

Ooops, dont go until youve said Thank you and God bless to the Camp servants and facilitators.

TO take you into Camp Calye, campers Mill Joseph Seraspe, Ron Martinez, and Jenelyn Bagaforo share the unforgettable... Whats really cool about Camp Calye? Mill: Camp Calye gave me a chance to live away from my comfort zone for four days. I was exposed not only to the burning rays of the sun but also to the complexities of team work, camping, team building, cooking, and many more. It was challenging but fun. The culminating activity transformed us from ordinary campers to Gods Champions! Ron: The camp was like a sneak preview of heaven to me. All were smiling and it was as if we were all brothers and sisters. Its like the talks set you free from your past which had been a hindrance for you to do greater things. Jennelyn: To shower and change for not more than seven minutes! Hahaha! Kidding

aside, I met wonderful people and made great friends in four days which I know will last a lifetime. Awww! And the best lesson you learned is Mill: Focus my time and energy to my relationships with people. Back home, I spent a lot of time with my gadgets. During the camp, my cell phone didnt even have signal. But I felt very happy. There were so many new friends I talked with. Ron: To serve others interests before mine. We learned how to lead and be proactive in most team building activities. Jenelyn: This may sound corny or clich to some but I spent four days with people who seemed to be strangers to me and Im happy to say that with them, I learned to LIVE, LOVE, and LAUGH.

How will you apply these lessons in your life? Mill: I will start with my family. I will improve my relationships with my siblings and parents. Then, I will work on my relationships with my classmates and friends. I will continue improving my relationships until I can inspire all the people around me to invest in their relationships as well. Ron: I am a graduating student, and will soon be working. So I can apply the tips on building relationships at the workplace. Jenelyn: Live as if theres no tomorrow, make the best out of everything I have, especially enjoy each and every moment possible. Show LOVE to everyone around no matter what or who they are. Last but not least, laugh-- not only when youre happy but also through your mistakes, so that you can let go. -- Interview by Bethany Anne P. Dechavez

Its been a decade since Id been singing that song. Back then, for me it was just a simple love song. But at the concert, the lyrics came to me on a different level. Even after the concert, the lyrics in my mind was going this way Man: Im looking back on things Ive done I never wanna play the same old part

And keep You in the dark. Now, let me show you the shape of my heart. God: Ill be the One (Ill be the One) Who will make all your sorrows undone Ill be the Light (Ill be the Light) When you feel like theres nowhere to run Ill be the One, to hold you And make sure that youll be all right Ill be the One Man: All you people cant you see, cant you see How His loves affecting our reality Every time were down, He can make it right And that makes Him larger than life! He lives within us not just for a decade but for centuries, millennia, forever! He doesnt care who you are, where you came from and what you did. His love is all He had to give. Yes, since Ive been attending the Feast, the shape of my heart has changed. And so has my BSB. He is now Brother, Savior, and Best friend Jesus Christ.

6 THE FEAST July 15, 2012

I AM a product of a university that encourages critical thinking and academic and intellectual freedom. So I have learned to challenge every social concept and norm. Yes, I have challenged even the concept of God and religion. Questions plagued my mind and challenged the belief that regular Sunday catechism gave me. Questions like: If theres a God, why is there so much hate and anger in the world? Amidst all of these chaos and inequality, what is the Church doing to help ease the plight of our brothers and sisters in Christ? Where is God during these times of difficulty and anarchy? Is religion still relevant? It took me years to finally pacify my troubled mind. I read, researched, and discussed my issues with peers like how a real scholar should when searching for the truth. As a result, I concluded that perhaps God is real but religion was, at best, an option for a life worth living. My point was, if the Holy Bible indeed contained everything that we need to live morally and spiritually well in this world, why do we still need religion? During this period in my life I attended Sunday Mass regularly but not for the right reasons. I was there not to take part in the holy ceremony but just to observe. The Sunday Mass looked to me as a useless ritual that society required its members to participate in, in exchange for social acceptance. During the homily, I heard priests who seemed to be more interested in local showbiz gossip and the latest twist in the local teleserye than explaining the Gods word to the common Juan. So that did not help. Sometimes I heard priests who were able to explain the gospel logicallybut that was a rare occurrence. It seemed to me that I would eventually end up like my friends in the university who believed in the existence of God but not in the importance of religion. I absolutely agreed with Mahatma Gandhi when he said, I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ. Because it made total sense to me: if God was love, then why are Christians fighting and hurting each other? Why is there still corruption, division, and inequality? I was certainly not seeing Christ in the community of believers that I was in. Then, one day, my parents and I accepted the invitation of our friends, Peter and Fe Zambale, to join the Feast, where they have been attending and serving regularly. At first, my parents excused themselves from attending the Feast, saying that the venue was too far

Now Im a Believer
By BLAISECEDRICKNETHERCOTT GOMEZ Upon hearing Bro. Bo Sanchezs explanation of Gods word I slowly but surely changed my mind about religions importance in my life. It is in attending the Feast every Sunday that I discovered the Light of Jesus Family and experienced the kind of caring community of Christians that I was longing for. Moreover, the priests that celebrate Mass in the Feast made me appreciate the importance of this Eucharistic celebration by explaining that days gospel in a manner that I could understand. The cool, quiet Plenary Hall of PICC helped enhance the solemnity of the Mass-- this is in contrast to most churches where the environment is less than ideal for meditation and perceiving Gods message. Once I was filled with Gods love, I decided to share it and serve full-time in our churchs choir group as a guitarist TRUE FOLLOWER. Blaise back in his parish church. as well as in another communitys music ministry. My hobby is photography so I recently attended the Photojournalism for the Lord seminar conducted by the Feast Media Ministry and now, I am a member of The Feast bulletins pool of photographers. I also use the skills I learned from the seminar to spread Gods message to others through the means of social media. So, Ive been through an amazing journey-- from being a skeptic and critic of religion to a true believer, follower, and servant of God. God indeed has His own way of winning His people back. In my case, I was able to appreciate God and the highest form of praise, the Mass, through the Feast and the Light of Jesus Family. God, through the words and teachings of Bro. Bo Sanchez, erased all my logical arguments against religion and replaced them with His everlasting love thats overflowing As Stanley Lindquist puts it: God allows us to experience the low points of life in order to teach us lessons we could not learn in any other way. ONE MORE MIRACLE

IN November 2011, I was on the road to go to the Feast PICC. It was my first time. I was not sure how to get to PICC, so I thought of taking a cab and just ask the driver to bring me there. But it was only 6:30 a.m. Still early. So I decided to go via the public transportation. I took three jeepneys and one tricycle. You read that right. From my place to the Manila Bay area, I had to take a jeepney, then a tricycle, then one more jeepney, and finally, the shuttle jeepney going to PICC. All the way, I asked people for directions. In the second jeepney, I asked the driverthe third person I asked directions from-- where I could get the shuttle jeep. Papunta kami doon. Sabay ka na lang sa amin, a lady passenger, carrying a baby, told me. Would you believe, of the many going to the bay area every Sunday, there must be hundreds-- what was the chance I would ride with someone going to the same place I was heading to? I said, Thank you! When we got off, I saw that aside from her baby, she was carrying two bags, so I offered to carry one of them. Without hesitation, she handed the bag to me and

then she led the way to the station of the shuttle jeepney. You hear of bad elements roaming on the road. But there I was, chancing upon a good soul --yes, an angel in a jeepneyto lead me to PICC. After we got off the jeepney, I handed the lady her bag, as I said Thank you once again. And she strolled on, along with the Sunday crowd. Since that beautiful morning in November, Ive been attending the Feast regularly. At

the Feast, Bro. Bo Sanchez always assures us that God loves us without condition and that He wants us to be happy and live a full life. Now I believe my jeepney angel was heaven sentbecause yes, God loves me without condition and He wanted me to find the happiest place on earth. Got One More Miracle?
