Goal-directed Instructional Design Plan - 7th Grade Math Author - Diana Virta 1.

A problem or a need Students need to be able to add negative and positive integers to succeed in future math concepts.

2.

A real-world performance Students will add integers using a thermometer and hourly forecast as a real world action to show increases and decreases in temperatures.

3. An instructional objective Students will participate in a visual model of the processes of approaching adding integers. Students will create word problems (puzzles) for fellow classmates. Students will be able to add positive and negative integers with missing information and present their findings through 4. A set of essential content Students must be able to recognize positive and negative numbers. They must realize when an answer will become more negative and more positive. This includes identifying the direction the number will be going both in their head and on a thermometer or number line 5. An evaluation consisting of a test or observation Students will use the smart board thermometer to visually represent the change in temperature adding degrees (it getting hotter) or subtracting degrees (getting cooler). The problems of subtraction will be written as adding a negative number. Problems will also start in the negative and more negative numbers will be added to it. Students must create 2 word problems/puzzles for their classmates to solve. They need to be about temperature and/or a sport. They must involve both positive and negative numbers and they must provide a detailed answer guide. Students will work in pairs to check the answer is correct before having their classmates solve them. The accommodation of a calculator can be used here while checking work. 6. A method to help participants learn The lesson will begin with an hourly forecast projected on the smartboard. The first will have the temperatures visible and they will journal about the changes. A class discussion/interactive portion (see #5) will follow. Students will then use numberline sliders to do practice problems at their desks. There are two models that students can use to check their progress while waiting for the teacher to come around. One model is of a visual representation of an example and the other is a few videos explaining the concept. This resource will be provided on the classroom computer with headphones available, and is an option for all students. Concluding with the creation of own word problems either by writing them or creating a comic strip. Motivation: Meaningfullness Weather is a part of every day life and especially in Michigan can

change drastically throughout the day. Students have a prior knowledge of weather so they can focus on the skill without learning a new method. It adds purpose to their learning. Pleasant consequences Students need to have a deep understanding of adding positive and negative numbers for futurFe concepts in mathematics. This includes in 7th grade through college math. By scaffolding it with an introduction of a completed chart, students know where we are going with the lesson. Students have the opportunity to self assess while participating at their desks and on the smart board, as well as peer assess at this time. Students will also have the opportunity to do adding with the slides at their desks or with black and red chips to signify positive and negative adding. The steps of metacognition are addressed here with where am I going and how am I doing while I get there? Students should express the goal of the lesson on top of their notes and created word problem. Novelty The students will be introduced with an hourly forecast and will be presented with a puzzle after finishing their word problem. In groups they will need to figure out different hour temperatures based on what happened previous hours throughout the day. There will be a story accompanied with it that asks relevance such as at what time would it be good to ride your bike? What should you wear when hunting in the morning? In the afternoon? At dusk? Socialization - Weather is always a good motivator for students since they adhere to it every day subconsciously. It is always a topic of discussion at any age and a good motivator for learning a topic that can be viewed as challenging. Audience For what audience are you designing this lesson? Consider the following: Age: This is mostly for students 7th through 9th grade. Since by Algebra I it should be mastered.

Skill level (including technology skills): Students must have adding positive integers mastered before moving on to negative and positive adding. Technology skills must include being familiar with the smartboard and moving objects on in. Also students must be able to run the compter at the back of the room for additional support. Prerequisite knowledge (including technology background): Students need to have a firm grasp on the number line and place value. They must know that negative numbers are smaller than positive numbers and they must move left to decrease always and right to increase. Technology background is mostly the teacher in this case having knowledge of the smartboard as a tool. Technology Needs The technology needed for this lesson includes the smartboard thermometer and computer for students to access for help videos. If these are available in the classroom no additional resources are needed since it will be contained to that atmosphere.
