With few exceptions, each setting's mode corresponds to the mode of the Gradual for the Sunday, regardless of textual similarity. A Word-centric compositional approach, repeated melodic motifs and psalm-tone patterns within each of the seven modes all help promote quick learning by cantor, choir, and congregation.
