Description

This week, Travel Today with Peter Greenberg returns to the sea, with a look at ships (ocean liners, cruise ships, riverboats) and ports. Peter Knego, Cruise Journalist and Historian, talks about the R.M.S. Queen Mary and other famous cruise ships of the past, with stories of some of the legendary personalities who sailed—and in some cases lived full time—on the ships. Julie Bartolotto, Executive Director of the Historical Society of Long Beach, talks about about the fascinating history of Long Beach, especially the port. Then it’s on to the Mississippi, with the American Queen‘s “Riverlorian” Jerry Hay. It’s all about storytelling, and Hay claims that while historians have to stick to the truth, riverlorians often weave a tall tale into their stories. Some of the truths of the Mississippi are that there were river pirates. Mark Twain gave the river international notoriety, and although most people know Mark Twain was not his real name, many are unaware he borrowed the pseudonym from someone else. Frequent cruiser, Gene Sloan of USA TODAY, talks about sailing on more than 100 cruise ships. Frank J. Del Rio, President and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line, talks about the evolution of the cruise industry (some would call it a revolution) and how the market is starting to shift to China. There’s all of this and more as Travel Today with Peter Greenberg goes out to sea for our last show of 2016. Happy New Year everyone!
