SED is a display system Concept was developing since 1987 Is a flat panel display with 3cm thickness

Earliest displays A specialized vacuum tube in which images are produced when an electron beam strikes a phosphorescent surface Affected by external fields Bulky , high power consumption and heat production

Work on the principle of blocking light rather than emitting it. Slow response time Less viewable angle Difficulty in producing dark and grey colours

Electrical pulse excite a pixel Complexity Cost greater than LCD quite easy to damage

Low

Thickness(3cm) Lower cost Superior picture quality

Sharp resolution and fast response(1ms )
Less

complexity in overall terms

A Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display (SED) is a flat panel display technology that uses Surface Conduction Electron emitters (SCEs) for every individual display pixel. The surface conduction electron emitter electrons that excite a phosphor coating on the display panel to display images.

Millions of miniature CRTs, called surfaceconduction electron emitters (SCEs) embedded in surface.

SED

Scans the signal Activates the necessary SCE s, which generate electrons that fly through the vacuum to the screen

Fabrication of Nano Gaps Nano Gaps are the electron guns of SED Fabricated by hydrogen absorption under high pressure treatment 100nm is normally used as the separation

Scans the signal However, where CRTs use one electron gun for the whole screen, SEDs use an electron emitter for each pixel Decides what to do with the red, green and blue aspect of each pixel All secs will create the picture simultaneously & virtually

Developed by Canon

Sharp resolution and fast response(1ms) and only 3cms in thickness Excellent colour and contrast potential Relatively inexpensive production cost 180 Viewing angle. Extremely low power consumption Lower cost than LCD or PLASMA

SED may also be susceptible to screen burnin Process for mass manufacturing seems not mature yet

They can be used in a wide range of applications including: computer monitors, television, instrument panels, aircraft cockpit displays, signage etc. And in consumer devices such as video players, gaming devices, clocks, Unknown (though optimistic) life expectancy watches, calculators, and telephones with SED Display technology. Potential for screen burn-in : but expected to overcome due to phosphor development Continued development for commercial applications like medical equipment withSED Display. Currently prototype only isexpected to continue displaying growth SED display panel segment expected soon additionally, the advent of digital Hi-Vision broadcasting and next-generation DVDs with best vision quality. SED monitors can be adopted for military instead of CRT displays because they are smaller, lighter and more efficient.
