A mutual fund is a kind of investment that uses money from many investors to invest in stocks, bonds or other types of investment. A fund manager decides how to invest the money, and for this he is paid a fee, which comes from the money in the fund. Mutual funds are usually "open ended", meaning that new investors can join into the fund at any time. There are thousands of different kinds of mutual funds, specializing in investing in different countries, different types of businesses, and different investment styles.

Closed-end funds A closed-end mutual fund has a set number of shares issued to the public through an initial public offering. Open-end funds Open end funds are operated by a mutual fund house which raises money from shareholders and invests in a group of assets Large cap funds Large cap funds are those mutual funds, which seek capital appreciation by investing primarily in stocks of large blue chip companies Mid-cap funds Mid cap funds are those mutual funds, which invest in small / medium sized companies.
