Background
Created in 1996 for the development of an international standard for information exchange. At the end of 1996 EDIFACT was chosen as the international standard to be used in message exchange. From 1997 to 2005 some 23 UN/EDIFACT message subsets were published in 3 major releases In 2006 work on the development of a new release incorporating the modeling and XML syntax was initiated.

In 2007 version 4 of the Edig@s message set was approved. This version proposes the Edig@s messages in the UN/EDIFACT syntax and the XML syntax.
