The region is a classificatory concept designed to represent physical, cultural, social and economic characteristics for given portions of the earths surface. The touchstone of regional analysis is diversityif none were evident, there would be no regions. It is a tract of land with more or less definitely marked boundaries, which often serves as an administrative unit below the level of the nation state. Regions within (or even across) nations may be defined based on a number of characteristics, ranging from administrative areas to shared geographic, cultural or socio-economic features, such as their landscape, climate, language, ethnic origin or shared history.
Types of region
Formal In this scheme, the key defining features of regions are uniformity, coherence, common identity and homogeneity all identified by detailed description of man land relationships.
Functional A functional region is one that displays a certain functional coherencean interdependence of partswhen defined against certain criteria. They are often described as nodal regions composed of heterogeneous units and populations (typically a network of towns and dependent smaller communities) often identified, or circumscribed, spatially by the pattern of flows of goods, services and people.
Regional development
Regional development is the provision of aid and other assistance to regions which are less economically developed. Regional development may be domestic or international in nature. The implications and scope of regional development may therefore vary in accordance with the definition of a region, and how the region and its boundaries are perceived internally and externally.
REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY OF PIJT-HME The main task of the Regional Council is to define, update, maintain and implement the general Development Strategy of the region. The strategy draws the guidelines for the regional future development. The strategy defines goals and measures for different development programmes (including EU Structural Funds implementation) and the Regional Plan. It also defines the division of labour between different programmes, plans and actors in the field of the regional development. In the Regional Council of Pijt-Hme strategic planning and management has been in focus during the recent years. Our intension is to create a continuous, iterative strategic decision process which gives us an opportunity to learn about the future and to define the strategy step by step. An essential part of the process is an open, transparent participation of different regional actors and decision makers. Our ambitious objective is to connect better than before general guidelines, individual measures, projects and acts.
