One of the concepts in this class is to learn more about the world around us and the people in it. Another concept is to learn more about ourselves!

Discovering who we are and what our values are is step 1.

So, who are you?

Activity
Follow these instructions for number sheet on the following page. Round 1
Find number 1. Your job is to draw a line to each consecutive number in the time allowed. You have 60 seconds. ReadyGoStop How many did you find? Was it funor was it frustrating?

Round 2
I created the number pattern by dividing the paper into quadrants. The rules I used were odd numbers on the right and even on the left, plus I put the 20s, 30s, & 40s in the top half and the 10s, 30s 50s & 70s in the bottom half. OK, now that you know the pattern, lets do it again! ReadyGo--Stop

How did you do?

Did it help knowing the pattern? Did you feel more in control? Did you feel more confident?
Point: We all function more efficiently and

confidently when we know the landscape rules, expectations, opinions.

Self-Assessment
Fact: In order to understand others, we must first understand ourselves. Fact: Skills are things you have the ability to do. They can be learned or developed. Skills can be transferred to other jobs, hobbies, experiences

Activity:

Who am I?

On the following page you will find the stick man. On each line surrounding your stick person, write a word or phrase that describes your identity.

WHO AM I??? Identity Dialogue In reviewing the figure, which three identities are the most important to you? Which one identity, in particular, is shaped by the values of your ethnic/cultural membership? What are your ethnic/cultural membership values? Do they differ from your personal values? Looking at the figure again, which one identity are you the most comfortable with? Why? Which one identity are you most proud of? Why? Which one identity are you least comfortable with? Why? If someone wanted to find out more about who you are, how should they approach you? How should they begin? What are the best ways to get to know you?

IF we are ever going to be able to understand others, we must first understand ourselves.

ActivitySkill ID
Look at the following list of words (next slide). Think of a work situationthis could be a current job or your dream job. Look at the list reflecting on the importance of these skills to you in your job and in your own identity. Divide them into two groupsthose you want to keep and those you dont.

Word List
Fast pace Tranquility Creativity Change & variety See results of work Opportunity to help others Interaction with others Variety Opportunity to learn Chance to advance Being punctual Making decisions Managing conflict Influence others Make the world a better place Money Independence Adventure Travel Work alone Opportunity for inovation Security Prestige/status Physically active Chance to analyze situation Good benefits

Next step for word list

Now select the top five skills/abilities you want to keep. Now reduce these to 3 skills. Why do you think you picked these 3 skills?

Discussion
Was this a difficult exercise for you? What does your choice of skills say about you and this time in your life? Would you have chosen the same skills 3 years ago?

What we must decide is how we are valuable rather than how valuable we are.
