Quality Center: Introduction

Quality Center is now acquired by HP. Mercury Quality Center ~ HP Quality Center Quality Center is an Interactive Test Management Tool. It is a topped up version of Test Director. Quality Center offers an organized framework for testing applicatons It is a web based tool which manages all aspects of testing process which otherwise is a time consuming task. It helps maintain a project database of tests that cover all aspects of applications functionality.

Quality Center: Introduction
It can be attached to our E-mail system so that the information about defect tracking can be supplied to all concerned persons e.g. Developers, persons in customer support & quality assurance personnel. This tool can be integrated with automation testing tools eg. WinRunner, LoadRunner, etc. as a well as requirement and configuration management tools so that we can get a fully automated application testing. Information can be analyzed in forms of different types of reports and graphs.

Architecture
Client Server Architecture
The clientserver model is a computing model that acts as distributed application which partitions tasks or workloads between the providers of a resource or service, called servers, and service requesters, called clients Clients and servers communicate over a computer network eg. Internet or Intranet or both, on separate hardware, but both client and server may reside in the same system. A server machine is a host that is running one or more server programs which share their resources with clients. A client does not share any of its resources, but requests a server's content or service function. Clients therefore initiate communication sessions with servers which await incoming requests.
Client Server
Functions such as email exchange, web access and database access, are built on the clientserver model. Users accessing banking services from their computer use a web browser client to send a request to a web server at a bank. That program may in turn forward the request to its own database client program that sends a request to a database server at another bank computer to retrieve the account information. The balance is returned to the bank database client, which in turn serves it back to the web browser client displaying the results to the user.
Client Server
Specific types of clients include web browsers, email clients, and online chat clients. Specific types of servers include web servers, ftp servers, application servers, database servers, name servers, mail servers, file servers, print servers, and terminal servers. Most web services are also types of servers.

Install Add-Ins
QC at times may be slow due to Client-Server nature of the application. The response depends on many parameters like:

Network Configuration Geographic Distribution of Testing teams Load on System Other factors

Install Add-Ins
To overcome network problems, testware are first created in Microsoft Word or Excel and then uploaded in QC. This is general practice. Using QC Data can be exported to different modules of QC from MS Word and Excel. To import form Word, MS Word Add-in is needed. To import from Excel, MS Excel Add-in is needed Apart from this, you need Mercury QC Connectivity Add-in.
Starting Quality Center
In a web browser, enter QC URL. Alternately, you can run QC from Start Programs from the QC program folder. Enter Username Enter password. Click Authenticate, Then Domain and Drop Down are activated.
Domain & Project??
A Domain is an independent business software department like ERP, CRM, Banking, etc. A Project is independent software teams under a given department. For Ex. Under the banking domain there could be project teams for net banking, treasury, wealth management and so on
