SharePoint run on-premise is based on a Server/CAL model

One license per running instance of each server used to support your deployment One version SharePoint Server

One license per end user (or device) that accesses your deployment
Two versions SharePoint Standard CAL; SharePoint Enterprise CAL

Specialty products like SharePoint for Internet Sites (FIS), FAST Search for SharePoint and Duet are licensed separately Additionally, Windows Server and SQL Server licenses corresponding to your users and deployment scenario are required SharePoint CALs must be same (or later) version of SharePoint Server

Standard Client Access License (CAL): Enables users in an organization to create, use and share information with one another via specialized web sites they can customize, manage documents & enterprise content, search for content and people, connect with others via social computing and make information broadly available via intranet portals. Enterprise Client Access License (CAL): Offers all of the features and capabilities of the Standard CAL, plus the right to use the more advanced FAST for SharePoint search engine, the ability to share business intelligence data via dashboards and reports using PerformancePoint Services, automate business processes using InfoPath forms technology, publish Microsoft Office content to SharePoint using Excel Services, Access Server, Visio Services, and the ability to build the most advanced business applications using the full feature set of Business Connectivity Services which integrate SharePoint with line-of-business systems.

*Also requires a separate FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint license. SharePoint Standard CAL and Enterprise CAL are additive, i.e. for each SharePoint Enterprise CAL you must also purchase a SharePoint Standard CAL. SharePoint server licenses are purchased separately from CALs

You may deploy a single server license of SharePoint Server for Internet Sites Enterprise (FIS-E), as a SharePoint server or as a FAST Search server but not both concurrently.
e.g. If you have 6 FIS-E server licenses, you are allowed to deploy any combination of FIS-E and FS4SP servers as long as it adds up to 6; e.g. 4 SharePoint Servers and 2 FS4SP servers.

You cannot deploy a SharePoint and FS4SP on the same server as this configuration isnt supported.

A FAST Search for SharePoint system would include both SharePoint Server 2010 components and FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint components, and you must have at least one of each. But as they scale, they are not 1:1. For example, a configuration sized for 45M items might have 5 FAST Search for SharePoint licenses and 2 SharePoint Server licenses, depending on various parameters.

Using the Software Usage Tracker, a new tool in the Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) 5.0, customers can get reports on server and client use of common deployments of Microsoft SharePoint Server. Map 5.0 provides:
Number of SharePoint 2010 servers discovered Number of devices accessing SharePoint 2010 servers Number of devices accessing SharePoint 2010 Enterprise servers (i.e., servers with Enterprise features unlocked) Number of users accessing SharePoint 2010 servers Number of users accessing SharePoint 2010 Enterprise servers (i.e., servers with Enterprise features unlocked)
