ETHIMOLOGY
Piezo is derived from the Greek word piezein, to squeeze. Piezoelectric materials produce a voltage when strained.
TRANSDUCER
A device that converts a signal from a signal corresponding physical form but otherwise physically different.
Pressure
Voltage
force
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The voltage is directly proportional to the force, pressure.
Coil Condenser Resistance Voltage source
PIEZOELECTRIC EFFECT
Discovered in the nineteenth century by Jacques and Pierre Curie
PIEZOELECTRIC EFFECT
Pressure Voltage
When pressure is applied to a material it creates strain or deformation in the material, this strain creates an electrical potential difference.
PIEZOELECTRIC EFFECT
The piezoelectric effect is found in materials with a specific electrical crystalline structure.
Quartz

Tourmaline
PIEZOELECTRIC MATERIALS
Synthetic materials
PIEZOELECTRIC MATERIALS
The material is isotropic and yields no resultant electric polarization when a force is applied.
PIEZOELECTRIC MATERIALS
Both materials yield parallel and perpendicular polarizations respectively when a force is applied.
PARTS
APPLICATIONS
Ultrasonic transmitters and receivers. Accelerometers
APPLICATIONS
Dynamic measurement of cylinder pressure and fuel injection pressure in the development of internal combustion engines.
ADVANTAGES
Low cost High sensitivity High mechanical stiffness Broad frequency range Small size High modulus of elasticity of many piezoelectric materials. The piezoelectric technology is insensitive to electromagnetic fields and radiation, enabling measurements under adverse conditions.
DISADVANTAGES
Elevated temperatures and very high pressures cause an additional failure in the internal resistance and the sensitivity of the measurement.
