Section 1-8 Introduction to Equations

Equation mathematical sentence that uses an equal sign

Open sentence if an equation contains one or more variables and may be true or false depending on the value of the variables

Classifying Equations
True, False, or Open 24 + 18 = 22 + 20 7 * 8 = 54 2x 14 = 54

Solution of an Equation
Solution = value of the variable that makes the equation true Is x = 6 a solution to 32 = 2x + 12?

Writing an Equation
Just like writing an expression, only with an equals sign and something on the other side! See problem 3, page 54

Solve Using Tables

5n + 8 = 48

Estimating a Solution
Make a table if it does not come out to a whole number, estimate like we did with square roots.. 9x 5 = 28

Section 2-1 Solving One-Step Equations

Equivalent Equations equations with the same solution use the properties of equality and inverse operations to write a simpler equivalent equation
Addition property of equality adding the same number to each side of an equation produces an equivalent equation Logically, there is an equality property for subtracting, multiplying, and dividing.. INVERSE OPERATIONS = addition and subtraction.multiplication and division Isolate the variable get in alone on one side of the equation with a coefficient of 1.

PROPERTIES
Addition property of equality adding the same number to each side of an equation produces an equivalent equation Subtraction property of equality same thing with subtraction INVERSE OPERATIONS = addition and subtraction.multiplication and division Isolate the variable get in alone on one side of the equation with a coefficient of 1.

Solving Equations
Lets solve a couple with addition and subtraction

Solve
-7 = 3 b

= y 3/2

PROPERTIES
Multiplication property of equality multiplying each side of an equation by the same nonzero number produces an equivalent equation

Division property of equality same thing with division

Solving With Multiplication and Division

4x = 6.4

x/4 = -9

Solving Using Reciprocals

4/5 m = 28

Solving Two-Step Equations

5 = 5m 23 + 2m

-8(2x 1) = 36

x x/3 = 10

Solving Two-Step Equations

3.5 0.02x = 1.24

Solving Two-Step Equations
