Todays Presentation
A bit about me.
Talk about how I am using screen capture to change

the way we provide feedback to our students Questions.

Please note links within presentation will not work but links at the end of presentation in reference section will all work

Teacher Training Videos

What my website does
Offers hundreds of step by step screen casts to show

teachers how to use different technologies in their teaching. Blogging, WordPress, Moodle, iTunes etc. In 2011 had just over 267,000 visits. Won 3 awards from the Times Higher, British Council and the University of Westminster. Newsletter 10,000 followers. Twitter feed has about 9500 (twitterrussell1955).

Screen capture
January 2000 saw an example of screen capture for the

first time. Immediately thought That could be used for feedback. 6 years later, saw the actual technology demonstrated Began experiments in May 2006 ( Greek student followed by group of Chinese students). In June/July 2006 wrote first article on idea in the Modern English Teacher . Example of screen capture feedback
University of Warwick

The initial idea

ELT class.
11 Chinese students. Focused on surface errors. Students sent essays, opened them on my screen, gave

feedback and sent videos to students. Students then re-wrote their essays after watching the video feedback. Gave out a simple questionnaire and did a focus group with the whole class ( not a researcher)

Feedback from students

Students liked the fact the feedback was both oral and

visual. Students thought they were getting more feedback ( about 150 words a minute).. Students felt it was motivating. Students make point about the importance of the voice. Style ( well done, good) Clearer The think the feedback is more personal. Dyslexic organisations Distance learning of Warwick University organisations

Early issues raised by the idea

How should I give the feedback? What stage of the process? (summative/formative) Is it good for simple grammar errors or more relevant

to other areas of the curriculum? (elaboration) How do I get a good balance between sound and visual elements? (Richard Mayer) Is it feasible to give feedback to all students? ( time) How easy is the technology? A second example. Classroom Feedback

The Idea spreads

Article in the Times Higher 2006 Reports in HEA ,JISC. Report submitted to UK government included the idea

Appearance on TV in France.
Generated enormous interest and led to early pieces of

research by Brick and also McLaughlin Use Twitter, Facebook and website to disseminate idea Presented in USA, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, UK, China, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, Turkey.

Different approaches
Began to realise that idea could really be used to provide feedback on anything. Could also be used to explain assessments, marking schemes etc.

Design Blogs Assessments Marking plans Study guides Grammar

Screen Capture Tools

Camtasia ( the tool I used/use)
Screenr Matchware Screen cast-o-matic CamStudio ( free) The term Screen Capture in a search engine provides

a whole list of tools.

Jing comes onto the market

Free tool. Limited to 5 minutes. Can save on your computer or upload to cloud and

receive link to play video. Quick distribution. Students do not need anything special to playback videos ( just browser). Super simple tool. Allows any teacher ( or student) to create videos Began to work with the tool in 2009

Where are we now?

Literally hundreds of teachers and institutions using

idea. 79 replies to a survey I did last year. Big projects at the OU (Guardian 2012) Work at Warwick. Coventry. Nagoya. Norway. ( just published) Canada. ( just reviewed-TESOL Canada)

Conclusions
Feedback idea is still in its infancy but offers a genuine

way forward for some forms of feedback and in certain contexts. May provide clearer, more detailed feedback. May be especially relevant to distance courses. Has potential as a tool for reflection. Can be used in other ways and in other parts of a course and is probably more suitable outside ELT. Interesting results from my approach to dissemination and social impact
