Margaret Hilda Thatcher has many claims to fame. She was our first woman prime minister. She was premier for longer than anyone else in twentieth-century Britain, winning three successive election victories and heading Conservative governments for a total of 11 years. She was also an extremely controversial figure, both idolised and vilified. Uniquely, she was the only premier to give her name to a set of political policies and attitudes. At the 1983 general election, in spite of unemployment doubling to some three million, the government won a landslide victory thanks in large part to Labours divisions and its left-wing policies. .Trade unions now operated in a tighter legal framework, including: the requirement for pre-strike ballots; the spread of privatisation of the major utilities altered the balance of the mixed economy. he government abandoned its commitment to full employment, stating this was the responsibility of employers and employees, and accorded priority instead to keeping inflation low. Welfare state benefits were increasingly subject to meanstesting.Government insisted that it could no longer be a universal provider. More should be left to the market, the voluntary sector and self-help.
