Physics Lesson 2: Linear Motion Graphs

Lesson Objectives Students will be able to Analyze and evaluate Linear Motion by Graphical Means utilizing linear motion graphs that include: displacement (d) vs. time (t) velocity (v) vs. time (t)

Physics Lesson 2: Linear Motion Graphs

Graphing Motion
Graphing the motion of objects gives us a way to interpret difficult motion Graphs allow showing a large amount of information in a compact way. You need to be able to sketch and interpret two main kinds of graphs of motion:
1. Displacement Time Graphs or d vs. t graphs 2. Velocity Time Graphs or v vs. t graphs
3

Physics Lesson 2: Linear Motion Graphs

Graphing Motion d vs. t

Scenario 1: - Fill in columns for position and time - Draw graph: position vs. time

Physics Lesson 2: Linear Motion Graphs

Graphing Motion d vs. t

Scenario 2: - Fill in columns for position and time - Draw graph: position vs. time
(compare graphs)
5

Physics Lesson 2: Linear Motion Graphs

Graphing Motion d vs. t For both scenarios - Calculate velocity at each point in time - Fill in data tables for velocity Compare the two scenarios

Physics Lesson 2: Linear Motion Graphs

Graphing Motion d vs. t - The slope of a d vs. t graph is the velocity

How do we determine slope?

Do Worksheet Problems: P-T Graphs

7

Physics Lesson 2: Linear Motion Graphs

Graphing Motion v vs. t

Scenario 1: - Use same data table for time and velocity - Draw new graph: velocity vs. time

Physics Lesson 2: Linear Motion Graphs

Graphing Motion v vs. t

Scenario 2: - Use same data table for time and velocity - Draw new graph: velocity vs. time

Physics Lesson 2: Linear Motion Graphs

Graphing Motion v vs. t For both scenarios - Calculate acceleration at each point in time - Fill in data tables for acceleration Compare the two scenarios

10

Physics Lesson 2: Linear Motion Graphs

Graphing Motion v vs. t - The slope of a v vs. t graph is the acceleration

Graphing Motion v vs. t

One more trick about v-t graphs

If you multiply velocity by time, what do you get? According to our formula... v = d / t or d = v t displacement! For a v -t graph, calculate the area under the line to know the object's displacement!
