Blog

What is a blog?
Blog
Blog is short for Web log.
A Web site that uses a dated log format,
usually with the most recent addition at
the top of the page and contains links to
other Web sites along with commentary
about those sites.
History of blogs
Began in 1992 with Whats New Web site.
Just a catalog of new Web sites.

hypertext/hypertext/WWW/News/9201.html

December 1997 Jorn Barger coined the term

weblog in his Robot Wisdom Weblog
History of blogs
In 1999, there were 23 blogs.

By October 2000, there were 5,500 and adding

300 new blogs a day.

By 2002, there were 750,000 bloggers just on

Blogger alone.
History of blogs
According to BlogPulse, there were 126
million blogs in 2009.

China Internet Information Center says there

were 72.82 million Chinese blogs and 47
million authors in 2007.

Today, we think there are more than 300

million blogs in existence and up to 5 million
posts a day.
Blogging basics
Date header: The date the post is written. Posts are
generally presented in reverse chronological order
(most recent first).

Title: Each post is given a title. This is a pithy phrase, a

pun, or even a series of symbols.

Time stamp and/or permalink: The time the post is

uploaded to the blog. The time stamp often is a link to
a permanent page just for this post. This allows other
bloggers to link to a post.
Blogging basics
Post: A word, sentence, paragraph or essay, with links
and names and current news. Key words and names
are often highlighted in boldface, which makes the post
'scannable' (the usability gurus at Useit.com tell us that
online readers don't read - they scan a page).

Author nickname: The name or nickname of the

person who wrote the post. For blogs written by one
person, the author is often left off (because the author
identification can be found in an About page). For
collaborative blogs, the author helps to differentiate
contributors. The nickname can also be a link to a page
of all the authors posts.
Blogging basics
Category: Individual postings are often labeled as part
of a category.

Comments: A software feature that allows readers to

leave their own comments and reactions to the
authors post.

TrackBack: A way for one blog post to link to the post

of another blog. In other words, one blogger can write
about the content of another person's weblog, and the
two posts are linked in a web.
Blog writing guide

Do your research. Dont ever report anything you

dont KNOW to be a fact. Research topics you are
writing about. Verify everything before hitting publish.
When in doubt, check it out!

Organize your thoughts. Jot down the important

points you want to make and arrange them in the
order you want to make them. Eliminate any ideas that
are not directly related to these points.
Blog writing guide

Use short sentences, even shorter paragraphs.

Theyre easier to read and understand. Each sentence
should have one simple thought. More than that
creates complexity and invites confusion.

Use simple words. You are writing to be understood

not to be impressive. Simple words work better than
big ones.

Be specific. Get to the point. Say what you mean. Use

specific nouns.
Blog writing guide

Write in a conversational style. Write as if youre

talking to a friend (a friend who corrects your
grammar).

Be clear. This may be the most important rule of all.

Look at your writing with an objective eye. Consider
what might be misunderstood and rewrite it. Find
what is irrelevant and delete it. Notice what is missing
and insert it.
Blog writing guide

Use links and media wisely. Dont overload your

readers. Every post doesnt have to have a video,
slideshow, podcast, AND picture. Pick and choose that
which is appropriate for the post at hand. Double
check your links and media.

Do use tags, trackbacks, & widgets. Blogging is a

social media. You are going to have to act as your
own hype man. And you need to link to your cohorts.
Tags, categories, trackbacks, blogrolls, Facebook,
Twitter, theyre all a way for you to find and be found.
