UNIT 4:

Natural Resources
Naturally within environments that exist relatively undisturbed by mankind, in a natural form

Natural Resources are the resources came naturally from Earth can be classified as renewable, non-renewable, and perpetual.

I. Energy from Non renewable Sources

COAL
Coal is very commonly used today to produce electricity. Coal is burned to heat water and convert it to steam. That steam is pressurized and can be used to turn a turbine which produces electricity. Coal is also used in iron and steel production, cement manufacturing, in the production of coal tar, home heating, and any number of industrial applications that require heat.

OIL
used in power stations to generate electricity used to power combustion engines in vehicles used to make all kinds of plastic, including polyester and nylon used in cooking non-renewable resource which is becoming more difficult to find and more expensive to produce

NUCLEAR

used to produce electricity, and also radioactive isotopes for medical use

GAS
Gas is used for many things, not just cars. Gas/Fuel are used in Nuclear Power plants, small lawn equipment, etc. Used in chemical reactions for more efficient fuel research, jump-start campfires

Renewable Resources
Can be replenished within a relativity short period of time.
Reproducing and growing

Perpetual Resources

Solar Energy
use the sun's energy and light to provide heat, light, hot water, electricity, and even cooling, for homes, businesses, and industry.

Hydropower Energy
Flowing water creates energy that can be captured and turned into electricity

Geothermal Energy
Is the heat from the Earth. It's clean and sustainable. Resources of geothermal energy range from the shallow ground to hot water and hot rock found a few miles beneath the Earth's surface, and down even deeper to the extremely high temperatures of molten rock called magma.

Wind Energy
Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy, such as using: wind turbines to make electricity, windmills for mechanical power, wind pumps for water pumping or drainage, or sails to propel ships.

Biomass Energy
"biomass" refers to organic matter that has stored energy through the process of photosynthesis

CONSERVATION
Reduce

Recycle

Reuse

FRESHWATER
Clean, fresh water is a vital natural resource. There is plenty of fresh water on earth, but the supply is not always available to those who need it
All our fresh water comes from the atmosphere, water in the ground, lakes, and rivers.

Mineral Resources

Metal
is an element, compound, or alloy that is a good conductor of both electricity

Industrial Mineral
geological materials which are mined for their commercial value, which are not fuel (fuel minerals or mineral fuels) and are not sources of metals (metallic minerals) Examples: limestone, clays, diatomite, kaolin, bentonite, silica, barite, gypsum, and talc. Some Examples of applications for industrial minerals are construction, ceramics, paints, electronics, filtration, plastics, glass, detergents and paper.

CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
Materials use for construction of buildings, houses, infrastructures etc. Example: Sand Stone Gravel

Agricultural Land
(also agricultural area) denotes the land suitable for agricultural production, both crops and livestock. It is one of the main resources in agriculture.
