What is a wifi..??
Wi-Fi is an abbreviation for wirelessfidelity known as 802.11 wireless network. Wi-Fi Wireless Technology that uses radio frequency to transmit data through the air. Wi-Fi is a generic term that refers to the IEEE 802.11 communications standard for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) .

What is a wifi..??
Wi-Fi Network connect computers to each other ,to the internet and to the wired network.

IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) established the 802.11 Group in1990. inventing this network they named it as wifi.

What is a wifi..??
Initial speed of wifi networks was approx. 1 and 2 mbps. It got improvised ever since the IEEE started upgrading this system since 1999 and many other standards were included which consisted 802.11a ,802.11b,802.11g.

The 802.11a standard.

It operates in 5GHz frequency. Multiple channels can be configured faster throughput and more Access points can be allocated. It is having 6-54Mbps speed realistically about 27Mbps. It uses the frequency division multiplexing technology.

It is having the range of 40-300feet indoor and 100-1000feet out door.

The 802.11b standard.

It operates in 2.4 GHz frequency range. Limits to the number of Access points in range of each other, and three . It has 1 to 11 Mbps speed ,but realistically about 4-5 Mbps. It uses direct sequence spread spectrum technology. It is having the range of 100-300 feet indoor and 400 -1500 feet outdoor .

The 802.11g standard.

It is extension of 802.11b,and shorter range than 802.11b. It is flexible because multiple channels can be combined for faster throughout, but limited to one access point. Runs at 54Mbps ,realistically about 20-25Mbps. It uses the frequency division multiplexing technology.

What can you do with a wifi network.

Quick/easy temp network access. Staff access to Corporate network. Patron internet access (hotspot). Interconnecting two networks. Transferring of data very easily. Used widely in gaming fields.

Elements required for a wifi network.

Existing wired network/services (Infrastructure Mode). DHCP/DNS. Access point. Antennas and bridges. Wireless adapter. Safe guards.

Elements required for a wifi network.

Access points : It is a wireless LAN transceiver or base station that connect one or many wireless devices simultaneously to the internet. Wi-Fi cards : they accept the wireless signals and relay information .they can be internal and external. (ex; PCI,PCMCIA) Safe guards :firewalls and antivirus software protect networks from uninvited users and keep information

Setting up a wifi network.

How a wifi network works.

A Wi-Fi hotspot is created by installing an access point to an internet connection. An access point acts as a base station. When Wi-Fi enabled device encounters a hotspot the device can then connect to that network wirelessly.

How a wifi network works.

A single access point can support up to 30 users and can function within a range of 100 150 feet indoors and up to 300 feet outdoors. Many access points can be connected to each other via Ethernet cables to create a single large network.

Daily usage of wifi.

Nowadays most of laptop computers come with inbuilt wifi routers making it really easy and simple to access the internet or data from any other computer or wireless router. Most of public places provide wireless internet connection through wifi and has proved to be very useful in day to day life. For E.g. malls, airports, shopping complexes etc.

Advantages of a wifi network.

Setup Cost Reduced cabling required. Flexibility Quick and easy to setup in temp or permanent space. Scalable Can be expanded with growth. Freedom You can work from any location provided that you can get a signal. Lower total cost of ownership Because of affordability and low install cost Additionally. Mobile Users Can access the Corporate network from any public hotspot using VPN.

Disadvantages of a wifi network.

Planning Depending on the goal of the user, the planning of a wifi network is complex. Security Greater exposure to risks. E.g.: 1. Unauthorized Access. 2. Compromising Data. 3. Denial of Service. Speed Slower than cable. Range Affected by various mediums such as walls, glass, water, etc. High power consumption.

Security issues.
Wireless technology doesnt remove any old security issues, but introduces new ones Eavesdropping Man-in-the-middle attacks Denial of Service . There is a greater exposure to risk factors involving outdoor bodies to cause loss or duplication of data items.

Security issues

Range and performance issues.

Performance decreases as distance increases. 802.11a Indoor 40 to 300 feet Outdoor 100 to 1000 feet 802.11b Indoor 100 to 300 feet Outdoor 400 to 1500 feet Interference - doors, walls, furniture, ceiling. 253 is the max limit of clients accessing a network but recommended is only 15 to 20 clients.

Infrastructure/design.
Option 1 Provide patron access using a totally separate network Infrastructure. Option 2 Use the existing corporate network, with additional equipment to provide access to patrons while securing internal network. Option 3 Use the existing corporate network, with same equipment to provide access to patrons while securing internal network.

Physical placement.
Active Ethernet powers access points over the Ethernet connection. Access Points should be mounted in an open space to optimize the signal strength, so no closets. Larger locations may require multiple access points to provide good coverage.

Cost and maintainance.

Access Point - $20 to $1000. Extended Range Antenna-$20 to $100. 802.11a/b/g Kit - $40 to $100. Active Ethernet - $100-$200. Wireless Adapter - $20 to 100. The average cost of adding a wired connection is about $400.

Selection of a wifi according to user.

Standards 802.11a, b, or g? Features Does it have all of the services that you need? Upgradeability Support for firmware upgrades? Aesthetics Looks good? Security Has WEP for encrypting data and controlling access? Range How strong is the signal, does it accommodate an antenna?

Selection of a wifi according to user.

Installation and Support Tools Company reputation? Price Does it fit in your budget? Availability Can you buy it now? Manageable Can you manage it remotely? Certified Is it Wi-Fi Certified?
