CHALLENGES OF ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION

Formal Channels of Communication The Organizations Authority Structure Job Specialization Informal Communication One-Way Communication Individual Ideas

FORMALS CHANNELS OF COMMUNICATION

Downward channels - from top to lower level Upward channels from lower to higher level Lateral or Horizontal channels - at same level within the organization

Diagonal channels between different levels in different lines of authority

ORGANIZATIONS AUTHORITY STRUCTURE

It has a major influence on communication effectiveness Status and power determines who communicates comfortably with whom The authority difference also affects the contents and accuracy of the communication

JOB SPECIALIZATION

Job specialization usually facilitates communication within differentiated groups. Members of the same work group are likely to share the same jargon, goals, tasks and personal styles.

INFORMAL COMMUNICATION

Communication within an organization; not officially sanctioned. It is a kind of grapevine which circumvents rank or authority, and can link organization members in any combination of direction horizontal, vertical or diagonal.

GRAPEVINE

What is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away. Chinese Proverb

About Grapevine
Grapevine is an informal channel of business communication, exists more at lower levels of organization. It is used by nearly everyone in an organization at one time or another. It can also distort and filter messages beyond recognition. Rumors as well as facts are carried by it which creates conflicts & misunderstandings at workplace.

Grapevines
Disadvantage: Less credible -- cannot take always seriously Incomplete Information Often misinform Advantage: Speedy transmission Feedback value Support to other channels Psychological satisfaction

ONE-WAY COMMUNICATION
An effective organizational communication model involves two-way communication. Information travels to the recipient, and then the response is sent back to the sender. When organizational communication breaks down, this flow of communication only goes one way (e.g. Management to employees)

Disadvantage:
Without a way to respond to the information they are being given, employees can start to feel alienated from company decisions. This can cause a drop in morale and increase employee turnover.

INDIVIDUAL IDEAS
Organizational communication can sometimes become generalized into a situation where it is departmental communication without the input of individuals. One of the strengths of any organization is its ability to get input from individuals within the company to solve problems.

Disadvantage:
When the individual input is lost in organizational communication, that added element of problem-solving is also lost.
