The English were the first to establish a permanent colony in the SC.

Charles Town was a successful colony because the English and the Native Americans learned how to cooperate and help each other.

Look back in your notes on the explorers. Who was the explorer who began the settlement of Charles Town and what is it called today?

Great Britain was the first European country to take an interest in the Carolina coast They claimed land in North America that would become South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. King Charles gave the entire area to eight Lords Proprietors for a repayment of a debt, and they named it Carolina.

When the Lord Proprietors decided to explore Carolina and build their colony, they needed people to live there. They offered English settlers land, religious freedom, and voting rights to come to the new land.

Why would religious freedom be appealing potential colonists?

Settlers left Great Britain and traveled to Barbados where they picked up more settlers and slaves Barbados is an English Colony in the Caribbean Sea. The Barbadians grew sugar cane on large plantations and made a fortune for themselves and England. They needed more land to expand their plantation system.
