Expressive

Information is important transaction-oriented. Transactional To get something done.

Poetic

Done by people who enjoy aesthetic aspects of writing. Write to derive and give pleasure.

In an ESLs classroom context...


Personal writing
Informal, less structured and private. E.g.: Notes, shopping lists, diaries, letters, journals, messages, greetings

Transactional writing
Well-organised, information is important and for communication. E.g.: Business letters, instructions, memos, plans, proposals, rules and regulations, reports.

Creative writing
Self-expression, leisure, and writer be keen on the language. E.g.: Poetry, short stories, songs, anecdotes, fiction, jokes, riddles.

Justification of Genre Narrative Writing


The sample of narrative writing chosen is a realistic fiction. It is a writing that describes events and experiences of ones life through his or her own perspectives. In the sample chosen, there were lots of places described by the writer. The writer soon narrates on her childhood memories when she was still in elementary school. Narrative writing can also be written as non-fiction, folktales, and modern fantasy. These are the most common genres in narrative writings.

Descriptive writing: A detailed account of physical attributes, with qualities of person & places. Attends to senses sight, hearing, smell, touch, & taste.

Justification of Genre Descriptive Writing


In the sample chosen, the writer puts an emphasise and senses of values for his favourite musical instrument classic, acoustic guitar. Mostly, in descriptive writing, there are lots of adjectives used to describe the characteristics of the character or the items mentioned. The genres involved in descriptive writing can be non-fiction and realistic fiction. It helps the readers to increase their ability in imagining things through relating the events with their five senses.

Expository writing : Presentation of facts, information & explanations. Does not provide interpretation or take a stance.

Justification of Genre Expository Writing

The genre that involves in this type of writing is nonfiction. It is about facts, detailed-information & explanations. It gives exposure to the readers about things that happen in real life & let them gain knowledge about it. There are no arguments, no decision-makings, & interpretation.

Persuasive writing : The writers point of view & statements.

Justification of Genre Persuasive Writing

This type of writing involves the ability to attract people to do the action desired. It persuades people to follow what the writer wants them to do/think. This type of writing can be seen for advertisements in the newspapers or magazines.

Argumentative writing : A discussive essay containing a proposition & evidence of proof.

Justification of Genre Argumentative Writing


A writing which involves an issue and different views from various sides on the issue alone. The sample chosen talks about the use of cell phones. Genre that involves in argumentative writings is nonfiction. In writing for young learners, this writing can be narrowed to writing they are usually exposed to debates, dialogues, and so on. It helps in getting a wide range of ideas on a particular issue or problem.
