This document discusses extensive reading (ER), comparing it to intensive reading. It defines ER as reading widely and in large quantities, for pleasure and general understanding. The key characteristics of successful ER programs are outlined, such as reading as much as possible from a variety of self-selected materials. Barriers to foreign language reading like over-reliance on dictionaries are addressed, and ER is presented as an effective solution by using level-appropriate materials without dictionaries. The advantages of ER include improved automatic recognition, vocabulary growth, and positive reading attitudes.
