INTRODUCTION
COMMUNICATION
It is the transmission of signals i.e. sending of electromagnetic

waves by electronic transmitters.

WIRELESS
Any type of electrical or electronic

operation accomplished without the use of wires. Wireless connections use air medium to connect and send & receive data. Channel is a division in transmission medium.

WIRELESS COMMUNICATION
Communication networks are generally implemented with

some type of remote information transmission system that uses electromagnetic waves.

Wireless communication may be via:

Radio frequency communication Microwave communication Infrared short range communication

Wireless modem: It is a modulator-demodulator which enables

communication at fastest speeds, typically in bits per second.

HISTORY
Most credit goes to Guglielmo Marconi, The Father of Radio, with the initiation of wireless technology

1894: Marconi experimented with Hertzian Waves (radio waves) to produce and detect waves over long distances
1896: Marconi established the Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company, the first radio factory

Standards of wireless
802.11b- Actually the first of the 802.11 standards.
Max Speed 11MB/sec. 128 bit encryption. 2.4 GHz

operational frequency. 802.11a- Best suited for large businesses concerned with security 54 MB/sec max speed. 5 GHz operating frequency. 152 or 256 bit level of encryption. 802.11g- Best of both worlds for the average user. 2.4 GHz, 54 MB/sec, 128 bit encryption.

Standards currently being utilized

Modes of wireless communication

Wireless communication can be via:
Radio frequency communication. Microwave communication, for example long-range line-of-

sight via highly directional antennas, or short-range communication.

Infrared (IR) short-range communication, for example from

remote controls or via Infrared Data Association (IrDA).

Applications may involve point-to-point communication, point-

to-multipoint communication, broadcasting, cellular networks and other wireless networks.

Security of Wireless communication

Two basic steps: A host system needs to authenticate the user or device that it's communicating with. The data must be protected as it travels from the user device to the destination host, whether to preserve confidentiality or to ensure that the message isn't changed or destroyed en route.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth is an open specification for wireless

communication and networking

Personal computers Mobile phones Other wireless devices

12

What is Wi-Fi ?
Wi-Fi is an abbreviation for Wireless Fidelity and a catch all phrase for the several different standards and recommendations that comprise wireless networking. Wi-Fi enables the user to deploy a computer network without needing to run cable throughout the facility.

Enables faster connections Better range

Better security
More spatial capacity i.e. bits per second per square metre

What is WIMAX ?

14

What is WIMAX..
(IEEE 802.16) is a metropolitan area network technology whose goal is to one day provide last mile broadband wireless access to the general population.

WIMAX delivering broadband to places where it would not be viable to establish wired connections. WIMAX has capability to connect to homes and businesses within a 30 mile radius, WiMAX has the potential to give millions of people access to the Internet cheaply and easily.
