What Is Recycling?.......

Recycling is a series of activities that includes the collection of used, reused, or unused items that would otherwise be considered waste, sorting and processing the recyclable products into raw materials, and remanufacturing the recycled raw materials into new products.

Key Points
Recycling includes collecting materials and sorting and processing them into recycled raw materials to be remanufactured into new products. Recycling reduces the pollution and energy used in manufacturing and processing, saves landfill space, and creates jobs and revenue. New methods for the recycling and reuse of certain items, such as computer and electronic equipment, are being developed to prevent waste and save additional materials and energy. Recycling can only be effective if people buy recycledcontent products.

Iron & Steel Unit Recycling

The steel industry has focused on recycling steel that is either discarded during manufacturing processes or recovered from postconsumer products.

Modern steelmaking now relies on recycled iron units for more than half of its production.
The first step in recycling steel is to collect scrap steel. This could take any form from soup cans to junked cars. The scrap steel is gathered together and then transported by truck, barge and train to a processing facility where the steel will be recycled.

Comparison of U.S. Recycling Rate of Steel and Other Materials, 1999-2000

The 70 million net tons of steel recycled in 2000 were used to produce about 112 million net tons of new steel in the United States. Iron and steel mills in the United States presently generate approximately 30 million tons of residues each year (containing nearly 7 million tons of iron units).

Recycling data management

Producers utilize RFID technology in functions such as production, logistics, maintenance an management of recycling for the entire duration of the product life cycle.
One of the producers roles is to maintain and update their own product databases. Information collected on a product can be retrieved using an RFID routing server from the producers information system, in which the producer has stored essential information on the product. Waste treatment facilities and service companies can provide producers and their organizations, with up to date, precise information on matters such as recycling costs and the numbers and types of equipment received for recycling. In addition, RFID technology will provide producers with a better opportunity to monitor the recycling of products if resellers, for example, start to identify products at recollection points.
