GREEN BUILDING

Anoop ck S8 CIVIL THEJUS ENGINEERING COLLEGE

Environmental Degradation and Energy Crisis Building sector is the third largest consuming sector after

industry and agriculture, account today for about 50% of the final energy consumption and is major sector responsible for environmental degradation. Challenging task to pursue the goal of building environmentally suitable structure

Introduction
structure and process that is environmentally

responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation

Current Scenario of Green Building Technology

Application of green building concept is relative new and is being recently getting adopted in the society.
Growing awareness of sustainability within India, competency and encouraging returns will encourage the real developers to shift towards construction of green buildings.

GREEN BUILDING CRITERIONS

Sustainable siting and design
Green building materials Water efficiency

Energy efficiency
On-site power generation Indoor air quality

Intelligent House Duisburg

GREEN BUILDING BENEFITS

30% to 40% reduction in operating cost.
Health and safety of building occupants. Incorporate latest techniques and technologies. Improve occupant health Reduce pollution Reduce water usage (by 20%- 30%) Eliminates creation of waste Reduce power consumption (by 40%- 50%)

Green architecture may have these characteristics:

Energy-efficient lighting and appliances. Water-saving plumbing fixtures.

Landscapes planned to maximize passive solar energy.

Minimal harm to the natural habitat. Alternate power sources such as solar power or wind power.

SALIENT FEATURES
Minimal disturbance to landscapes and site condition
Use of Recycled and Environmental Friendly Building

Materials. Use of Non-Toxic and recycled/recyclable Materials. Efficient use of Water and Water Recycling Use of Renewable Energy Indoor Air Quality for Human Safety and Comfort Effective Controls and Building Management Systems

Water efficiency
Indoor water conservation plan
Use low flow plumbing fixtures Use high performance appliances

Outdoor water conservation strategies

Use a rain water collection system Use sustainable landscaping techniques Use high efficiency irrigation systems

Energy efficiency

Passive solar design

Optimize the site, design, and orientation Landscape to provide natural shade Use natural day lighting Use natural heating and ventilation Energy efficient products Use high performance thermal insulation Use high performance roofing and glazing Use high performance lighting systems Use high performance heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems Use high performance appliances

Energy management plan

Evaluate tradeoffs and minimize projected energy

costs. Train building occupants. Track and optimize performance overtime. Employ an energy management system and commissioning.

Energy efficient products

Use high performance thermal insulation
Use high performance roofing and glazing Use high performance lighting systems Use high performance heating, ventilation and air

conditioning systems Use high performance appliances

CONCEPTUAL DRAWING OF GREEN BUILDING:

GREEN BUILDING MATERIALS:

Use recycled content building products Use locally available or naturally occurring building products Use rapidly renewable resources Use certified wood Use structural insulated panels Use of recyclable sustainable materials As specified in Green Guide Use of pre fabricated materials System for Rooftop rain Water Harvesting for water reuse or recharging of underground water Use of modern gadgets, information Technology and automation control for Security and comfort

THREE BASIC STEPS OF PRODUCT SELECTION:

Research Evaluation Selection. BENEFITS

Environmental benefits
Reduce the impacts of natural resource extraction,

manufacturing, operations and disposal Economic benefits Improve the bottom line Health and safety benefits

CASE STUDY
OLYMPIA TECH PARK CHENNAI, INDIA Building Type: Office Approximate gross area: .13,00,000 Sq. Ft Number of floors above ground: 8 Year of completion: 2006

Main Green Features of the project

The client (Olympia) and the architects developed a strategic

green option to recycle/reuse the entire building. Allows opportunities for natural ventilation in summer and acts as a warm buffer zone in winter. Energy efficient HVAC and electrical equipment and systems design providing considerable energy savings of over 25%. High efficiency water system design resulting in water use reduction by over 40%.

CONT..
Effective use of recycled materials for over 15% of the

project cost. Utilization of regionally manufactured materials for over 60% of the project cost thereby reducing the impact of environmental pollution. Exemplary performance on construction waste management diverting close to 98% of the construction waste generated at site.

Intelligent Green Buildings of Tomorrow

CONCLUSION:
It becomes inevitable to steadily switch over to the use

of energy efficient building materials and technologies and device methods and mechanisms to utilize industrial/mine wastes and recycling and reuse of building wastes for the manufacture of building materials and products for the sustainable construction practices.

Lets join hands to promote this technology for our better sustainable future.
