RFID v/s Barcode RFID in Supply Chain, Shipping & Logistics
RFID Technology:
What does it mean? How it works? What are the components? RFID Applications
How it works?
Any object or person is tagged with a tiny silicon chip and an antenna; the chip plus antenna (together called a tag) can then be scanned by mobile or stationary readers, using radio waves (the RF part). The chip is encoded with a unique identifier, allowing tagged items to be individually identified by a reader (the ID part).

Improved inventory visibility Reduced shrink / loss prevention1Improved inventory accuracy Increase the number of perpetual/cycle counts that can be done annually Increased sales by providing customers with more accurate information on product location Reduced down time during physical inventory Reduced lost sales associated with fewer out-of-stocks that result from phantom inventory Improved customer insight
Improved demand forecasting and planning Improved margin with fewer end-ofseason markdowns that result from un-recognized store inventory Reduced chargebacks Reduced store labor associated with cycle counting inventory and performing adjustments Reduced corporate admin labor w/ fewer inventory adjustments and reconciliation Reduced distribution costs Reduce anti-counterfeit (reduce knock offs) Reduced transportation costs

Cost of Tags:
First use of Internet roots back to 1969 but the Internet didnt really take off until the early 1990s. The bar code was invented in 1952 but didnt take off until the late 1970s
STRIDES Components
On the bottom layer we have our hardware which includes our RFID scanners & Tags. Our middleware reads the scanner signals and convert it to the format desired by the upper web application layer. Our web application layer stores the data and provide appropriate reporting along with controlling alerts mechanism. Our SMS Gateway is connected with the web application layer and sends out sms when it is required.
How it works?
We deploy our RFID scanners on entrance/exit points. When any person/good/vehicle carrying our RFID tag passes through (or does not pass through) scanner range on a specified time, it gets logged. Depending upon the event logging rules, it generates the web/email/sms alert or send on/off signals to an electronic device. Interactive log reports of events can be created/seen from anywhere down to a single reader level depending upon the permissions.
