ANCIENT EGYPT

GEOGRAPHY AND ECONOMY


The River Nile played an important part in the history of Egypt. The Nile River not only provides water but also supplies the people with fowls and fish for food. The Nile helped develop a system of government. Formation of two kingdoms- Lower Egypt and Upper Egypt

The Nile encouraged the development of a SYSTEM OF WRITING (HIEROGLYPHIC/HIERATIC).

The Nile also promoted the DEVELOPMENT OF GEOMETRY Calendar was constructed. They divided the year, consisting of 365 days, into 12 months, each with 30 or 31 days.

HISTORY AND PEOPLE


The first Egyptians were wandering hunters and herdsmen.
They began to settle in the Nile Valley

Learned to sow grains and domesticate animals

They built houses Grew into Towns and Cities Separation of the Two Kingdoms (Upper and Lower Egypt) The two kingdoms were united into a single nation Age of Prosperity

3 Periods ( Age of Prosperity)


PYRAMID AGE (3000-2500 B.C.) The pharaohs built massive tombs called pyramids. FEUDAL AGE (UNTIL 2000 B.C.) Feudalism developed when the pharaohs began appointing nobles to rule the provinces. These period ended when the hyksos conquered Egypt. AGE OF EMPIRE Egypt became a conquering nation. It extended its power over SYRIA Egypt was then conquered by Persia. It was next conquered by Alexander the Great, then it became part of the Roman Empire. In 1882 it fell to Great Britain.

GOVERNMENT AND RELIGION


King of Ancient Egypt was called Pharaoh ( it means great house and palace). The Pharaoh is the head of the government and the chief priest. Pharaohs were believed to be half god half human.

They believed in life after death. They built pyramids were the dead body of the Pharaoh was entombed.

Egyptians embalmed the body of the dead to preserve them from decay. (MUMMIFICATION) Placed in the coffin were personal belongings, food and tools.

The Egyptians invented closed furnace to melt gold and other metals. They made bottles and vases

SYSTEM OF WRITING
Hieroglyphics was a combination of characters representing objects and of words and syllables

The ancient Egyptian writing was first deciphered after the discovery of the Rosetta Stone.
