Refineries In India

Installed Capacity and Refinery Crude Throughput

Existing Petroleum Product, LPG & Crude Pipelines in the Country

Brief Details of Few Refineries

Panipat Refinery
Built at the cost of Rs. 3868 crores (including Marketing and pipelines installation) with an installed capacity of processing 12 million tonnes per annum of crude oil. The Refinery produces annually about 2 lakh tonnes of cooking gas (LPG), 8 lakh tonnes of Petrol, 3 lakh tonnes of jet fuel, 6 lakh tonnes of kerosene & 24 lakh tonnes of Diesel apart from other products such as Naphtha, Bitumen etc For environment protection & conservation, the refinery has also commenced production of ultra low sulphur diesel and 1 % benzene petrol (Benzene is a natural constituent of crude oil. Benzene causes cancer and other illnesses)

The various units of the refinery are :

AVU (Atmospheric & Vacuum Distillation Unit) : (6.0 Million Metric Ton Per Annum): Crude oil distillation / fractionation for further processing in secondary units HGU (Hydrogen Generation Unit) : (0.038 Million Metric Ton Per Annum): Hydrogen generation for processes requiring hydrogen CCRU (Continuous Catalytic Reforming Unit) : (0.5 Million Metric Ton Per Annum): For improving octane number of petrol component. This process eliminates requirement of environmentally hazardous TEL (Tetra Ethyl Lead) blending in petrol. RFCCU (Residue Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit) : (0.7 Million Metric Ton Per Annum): Catalytic cracking of heavy intermediate stocks for production of lighter products viz. LPG, Petrol, Diesel components

Mathura Refinery It was commissioned in the year 1982. At present it has the capacity of processing 8.0 MMTPA of crude oil The refinery, which cost Rs.253.92 crores to build,
The crude oil with low sulphur from Bombay High, imported crude with low sulphur from Nigeria, and crude with high sulphur from Middle East Countries are processed at this refinery. Mathura Refinery has taken a number of initiatives to save the environment, public health and also to preserve the national monuments in and around the city of Mathura , particularly Taj Mahal at Agra

Mathura refinery has been producing highly eco-friendly petrol and diesel for the NCT, NCR and Agra region.
The Refinery enjoys the distinction of being the first refinery in India capable of producing 100% auto fuels that meets Euro - III norms

The process units at Mathura Refinery Atmospheric & Vacuum unit , Vis-breaker Unit, Bitumen Unit, Sulphur Recovery unit and Fluidized Catalytic cracking Unit. Once Through Hydro-cracker unit (OHCU), Catalytic Reforming Unit (CRU), MS quality up gradation, Diesel hydro de-sulphurisation Unit, (DHDS), new Sulphur Recovery unit (SRU), Diesel Hydrotreating (DHDT) unit Mathura Refinery is having its own captive power plant,

Jamnagar Refinery , Of Reliance Gujarat.

It comprises of a petroleum refinery and associated petrochemical plants. The refinery is equipped to refine various types of crude oil (sour crude, sweet crude or a mixture of both) and manufactures various grades of fuel from motor gasoline to Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). The petrochemicals plants produces plastics and fibre intermediates.

Created in a record time of less than three years,

The Jamnagar Manufacturing Division has a 33 - million tonnes per annum refinery that is fully integrated with downstream petrochemicals units which manufacture naphtha-based aromatics as well as propylene-based polymers.
RPL commenced its crude processing on 25 December 2008. The refinery project is being implemented at a capital cost of Rs 270,000 million (Rs 27,000 crore) The refinery is able to process a wide variety of crudes- from very light to very heavy (from 18 to 45 degree API) and from sweet to very sour (with sulphur content from 0 to 4.5%).

The existing refinery complex at Jamnagar has more than 50 process units, which together process the basic feedstock, crude oil, to obtain various finished products deploying the following major refining processes:

Crude oil distillation (Atmospheric as well as vacuum distillation) Catalytic cracking (Fluidised Catalytic Cracker) Catalytic reforming Delayed Coking Hydrodesulphurisation : Catalytic Reforming Unit : Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit : Sulphur Recovery : Hydrogen Generation : Merox Treating All process units in the Jamnagar Manufacturing Division, the largest grass-roots refinery complex in the world

Special features of the refinery complex : Reliance refinery configuration is characterized by its superior product slate as compared to that of the other refineries. Two important features in this regard are:
High proportion of high-value products such as propylene and LPG (adding to over 10% on crude processed as compared to 2-3% for most other refineries) Nil production of low-value "black oils" - fuel oil (compared to 1220% on crude processed for most other refineries) under normal circumstances

(Business Standard sept, 2011) Reliance Industry Ltds (RIL) refinery at Jamnagar has been ranked the best by Shell Benchmarking magazine for the third consecutive year in energy and loss performance from among 50 refineries worldwide) The integrated petrochemical and refinery complex at Jamnagar accounts for 24 per cent of Indias refining capacity and is the worlds largest grassroot refinery and the fifth largest at any single location
