One Year Ago Today-- DUST STORM


The Cannon Air Force Base and Clovis observations (in eastern New Mexico) reported blowing dust and visibility restrictions by late morning on January 22, 2012. The MODIS 1km imagery for 11:19am MST on January 22nd depicts the well-developed dust plume. Lubbock (KLBB) was reporting one-half mile visibility with blowing dust and a peak wind of 50 knots.

Tonight - Wednesday Quiet weather. BUT, strong inversions/poor ventilation resulting in air quality concerns, especially Wed-Wed Night. Thursday Gusty winds and low humidity across the eastern plains during the afternoon. Friday-Saturday Moist Pacific storm system to spread precipitation into western and northern areas with potential for some travel impacts Friday Night into Saturday.

Wednesday: High pressure aloft continues to dominate the region. Poor ventilation to linger through the day. Warmer areawide, but especially in the mountains.

Inversions= Cold temperatures at the surface (valleys) topped by very warm temperatures aloft (8-15 kft MSL).

Thursday: Increasing cloudiness west, increasing windiness east. A weak, fast-moving disturbance clips the area with only limited impact. Moisture to our west poised to quickly spread eastward Thursday Night.

Still a fair amount of uncertainty regarding the eventual track and strength of Storm #2. Latest indications suggest it will may briefly close off to the west of NM late Monday before sliding eastward. Regardless, early next week appears to remain active.

VERY STRONG INVERSIONS -- cold air at surface topped by warm air aloft. This will result in poor ventilation and air quality concerns, especially Wednesday-Wednesday Night.

FRIDAY - SATURDAY Travel impacts due to snow possible Friday Night - Saturday across the higher terrain of western and northern NM. However, snow levels will be quite high thus impacts are not expected to be widespread.
