Are these values or, are they

eternal ?

subject to change,
with changing times ? .... as in the case of fashions ?

Are these values

universal ?

[ uniformly applicable to all ~

irrespective of
religion, caste, creed, age, gender, and so on ? ]

Kerala

In gods creation, it is believed that there are 84 lakhs of species ~ with

human life
topping the list.

The human being is blessed with a mind the thinking faculty, & viveka the faculty of discrimination.

Kerala

Everybody today seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater developments and greater riches and so on,

~ parents have very little time for each other; parents have not much time for their children; -

and in the home begins the disruption of peace of the world

ATTITUDE contributesto Success ATTITUDE contributes to Success

A study attributed to Harvard University found that

When a person gets a job or a promotion

85% - because of his attitude, and only 15% - of the time because of intelligence and knowledge of
facts & figures.

David & Goliath

Goliath: Why dont you stand up and fight the Giant ?

Others : Dont you see he is too big to hit ? Goliath: No. He is not too big to hit.

He is too big to Miss.

Same Giant, different perceptions !!!

ATTITUDE is the foundation

The Calgary Tower has a total weight of 10,884 tons, of which 6,349 tons

i.e. 60% is below ground.

Just like a great building stands on a great foundation, so does success. And the foundation of success is ATTITUDE !

Why dont we Change ?

Change is Uncomfortable. Change can often be Stressful. Change seems Impossible.

We prefer to stay Negative.

How do you build a Positive ATTITUDE ?

Awareness of principles that build a positive attitude. Desire to be positive.

Discipline and dedication to practice those principles.

ATTITUDE

With grateful thanks adapted by Prof. V. Viswanadham

The difference between the poor countries and the rich ones is the age of the country.

NOT

This can be explained : Countries like India & Egypt, are thousands of years old and yet are poor.

On the other hand,

Canada, Australia and New Zealand,

that were unknown few hundreds of years ago today are developed countries and are rich.

The difference between poor and rich countries does not reside in the available natural resources.

Japan
has a limited territory, 80% mountainous, prone to earthquakes, inadequate for agriculture & cattle raising, but it is the second world economy. The country is like an immense floating factory, importing raw material from the whole world and exporting manufactured products.

Switzerland
Does not plant cocoa but has the best chocolate of the world. In its little territory they raise animals and plant the soil during 4 months per year, but they produce dairy products of the best quality. It is a small country that transmits an image of security, order & labor, which made it the worlds

strong safe.

What then is the contributing factor ?

Significant intellectual differences ? Surely, Indians are not intellectually inferior.

The difference lies

in the

attitude of the
People.

On comparing and analyzing the attitudes and behavior of the people, we find that

a great majority
of the rich and developed countries follow the following principles in their lives:

1. Values and Ethics 2. Integrity. 3. Responsibility. 4. Respect for the laws & rules. 5. Respecting the rights of other citizens. 6. Work loving honest and hardworking. 7. Strive for saving & investment. 8. Will of super action. 9. Punctuality.

In poor countries,
it is generally observed that only a small minority follow

these basic principles in their daily life.

We are not poor because we lack natural resources or because we are intellectually inferior.

We are poor because we lack the right

attitude.

WORK ETHICS

WORK ETHICS

WORK ETHICS
It is a set of values

based on hard work and diligence. It is a belief in the moral benefit of work and its ability to enhance character. It includes being reliable, having initiative and maintaining social skills, honesty and accountability.

In essence, WORK ETHICS implies :

Before You Act -- Is this fair ?

ASK:

Is this legal ?
Is it against the policy ? Could the action cause loss or harm to

anyone ?

If everyone I knew saw me,

would I feel uncomfortable ?

Principles of Personal Ethics

Concern for the well-being of others

Respect for the autonomy of others

Trustworthiness & honesty Willing compliance with law Basic justice; being fair Doing good benevolence Preventing harm

Evaluating Ethical Actions

9
TESTS

Actions can be evaluated using a variety of tests

1. Harm Test

Benefits

Harms

Do the benefits outweigh the harms, short term and long term?

2. Reversibility Test

Would I think this was a good choice if I traded places?

3. Colleague Test

What would my professional colleagues say?

4. Legality Test

Would my choice violate a law or policy of my employer?

5. Publicity Test

How would my choice look on the front page of a Newspaper?

6. Common Practice Test

What if everyone behaved this way?

7. Wise Relative Test

What would my wise old aunt or uncle do? or

Would I want them to know what I am doing?

8. The Hiding Test

Do I want others to know what Im doing?

And Finally, 9. the Self-Respect Test

How will I feel about myself after making this choice?

decisions based on how we feel about what we do.

But all these tests promote

However, the best decision is to

Do the right thing because it is the right thing to do.

Sow a thought, reap an act. Sow an act, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap an eternal destiny.

During my eighty seven years, I have witnessed a whole succession of technological revolutions. But none of them has done away with the need for character in the individual or the ability to think. - Bernard M. Baruch
