Green Buildings

What is a Green Building?

Green buildings are designed to reduce the

overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by: Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity Reducing waste, pollution and environment degradation

Why Green Buildings?

Create healthy indoor environments

with minimal pollutants. And feature landscaping that reduces water usage. Impact on the environment, human health, and the economy. Better air and water quality. Reduction of waste streams. Conserve and restore natural resources.

LEED evaluates environmental performance from

a whole building perspective over a buildings life cycle The LEED Green Building Rating Systems are voluntary, consensus-based, and market-driven. Its rating system has turned out to be the most versatile and robust So, the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) decided to adopt the LEED rating system.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Heat Reflecting Roofs Tiles and sanitary ware can reflect most of the heat. Reflective roof coatings can also be applied to reduce solar heat. Minimum Savings of 25% in energy usage.

WINDOWS
Double-pane windows

can be up to 50% more efficient Double glazed windows with a layer of argon. Windows with ceramic pattern can reflect 70% light.

Sliding Sunshades

Roof Overhangs
Usually affects the

amount of direct solar radiation that strikes a surface. The higher the arc of the sun, the longer the shadow overhang generates along the face of the wall.

Trombe Walls

TRELLIS

LIGHT EMITTING DIODES

Small, solid light bulbs

which are extremely energy-efficient. LEDs can save upto 80% of the energy. The operational life of current white LED lamps is 100,000.

UNDER FLOOR HEATING

Under floor heating

warms the air just above the floor. Saves 30% energy. Safer-No potentially dangerous hot surfaces exposed.

Ground Source Heat Pump

Consists of a heat pump, an air delivery system

and a heat exchanger. Provides heating, cooling, and domestic hot water.

Solar Panels
Solar panels make

use of renewable energy from the sun. 1. Flat Plate Conductors 2. Evacuated Tube collectors 3. Photovoltaic Panels

WATER EFFECIENCY
Grey Water System Grey water systems recycle wastewater collected from showers, tubs, and sinks. Lower fresh water use Plant growth

Dual Flush toilets

Dual flush toilets

handle solid and liquid waste differently . Savings up to 67% of water usage in most homes.

Rain Water Harvesting

Native Landscaping
Use of native plants, including trees and shrubs Low-maintenance gardening and landscaping Flourish without irrigation or fertilization Resistant to most pests and diseases.

rated Green Building outside the USA All wastewater and runoff generated by the building is recycled Roof gardens cover 55% total roof surface area Solar voltaic panels produce 100-120 kwhr per day(15-20%)

CONTD....
Green Roofs provide insulation for work centres

and offices. Most of the workspace uses daylight. Low-flush toilets and waterless urinals. Energy consumption is half that of normal building.

Old mud-block

building has been renovated Blocks are build in two layers which helps in insulation as well as climate control. No material wastage during construction Orientation of the building keeping east and west faces blank
