The Institute of AgricultureKarnobat was founded in 1925 as a Research Trial Field. The Institute is situated in SouthEast Bulgaria, a region with traditions in agriculture.

The Institute of Agriculture-Karnobat conducts research, applied and service activities in the following directions:
Breeding, variety maintenance and seed production of barley, oat and coriander; plant physiology and biochemistry; technologies of field crop production; plant protection; soil science and agrochemistry;

Today 17 researchers work at the Institute of Agriculture Karnobat. 10 of them have the educational and scientific degree Doctor. 10 researchers work in the Breeding and seed production section and 7 researchers in the Technology of field crops section

The experimental work is conducted in two experimental fields, one greenhouse, and 7 specialized laboratories.

Scientific section: Technology of field crops

Improvement and up-dating of main technological

units and working-out of complete ecologically friendly technologies meeting the requirements of contemporary agriculture for field crops; Studies related to soil cultivation and increase of its fertility, variety cultural practices and crop rotations, fertilizing, sowing and sowing rates, models for companion cropping of land; Increase of productivity and quality of output in field crops under conditions of biotic and abiotic stress; Use of plant protection, biological and ecological methods for control of weeds, diseases and insects pests in field crops. The Institute maintains scientific contacts with similar scientific institutions in Hungary, Ukraine, Russia, Turkey, USA, Syria (ICARDA), etc. exchanging information and genetic materials.

Extension Service and Marketing Bureau

The Institute has an Extension Service and Marketing Bureau that popularizes and introduces the scientific achievements, renders direct advisory assistance to farm growers on a national and regional level.
