Overview
The Bank of china tower is mainly commercial office building, which

consists of 72-stories.
Total building height = 367.5 m = 1205 ft. For the first time, a mega structure composed of a pure space-truss is

used to support almost the entire weight of the building.

The building is situated on Garden Road, Central, on Hong Kong Island. Floor area = 135,000 m2 It was Hong Kongs and Asias tallest skyscraper from 1989-1992.

DESIGN CONCEPT
Building looks like a glittering tower of diamonds. The cross braces and

triangular framework of the building are designed to withstand typhoons.

Building has four triangular

towers of varying heights that emerge from a square, changing geometry in several silver reflective glassy prismatic pyramid.

Vertical load transfer

All forces are displaced to one

of the three columns of the top frame.

Forces are carried through

these four columns down

Horizontal/wind load transfer

The structure of the building is

composed of truss web braces, which resist lateral as well as gravity loads. Most of the horizontal loads come from the South East side, as this is generally the direction and side that the wind load is applied. The concrete columns which span the height of the building give the building unique strength.

Foundation
The structure is supported by a concrete caisson

system foundation.
There are 110 densely packed caissons found within

the area of the building footprint, as well as 4 larger caissons which are found at each of the corners of the building structure/ foundation.

STRUCTURAL ARRANGEMENTS
Structure consists of

4 outer concrete columns.

Made up of composite

Structural steel trusses & Glass certain walls.

Buildings principle

Structural system is a Bundled vertical space truss.

IMPORTANT DETAILS
Overall cost :
HK $1 billion (US $ 130 Million)

Time taken :
4 years ( 1985 1989)

Controversy :
The tower was contrary to Feng Shui for its sharp edges and its negative symbolism by the numerous X shapes in its original design.

Some Important facts

The tower has a small observation deck on the

42nd floor open to the public; it gives views to the northwest of Hong Kong. the building has 45 elevators First composite megastructure space frame highrise building. The megastructural steelwork is expressed externally by naturally anodized panels that form part of the curtain wall.
