Did you structure your presentation like this?


Purpose and content How much detail can you cover in your allotted time? Needs of your audience What does your audience already know about your topic? What do they need to know?
The Introduction: What am I doing? Introduce yourself, your topic and the context of your topic. Tell your audience what you will cover in your talk. The body: What have I found? Include key points, new knowledge, examples, trends in your data, etc. Use signposting language: the first point I want to make concerns . Conclusion: Why is this important or relevant? Highlight the implications or possible applications of your findings. Finish with a take home messages.

Thesis statement
a statement which clarifies the main argument for the rest of the essay. at the end of the first paragraph of an essay; summarizes the main point and perspective of the writer introduces the reader to the purpose of the essay one or two sentences expresses one main idea is specific provides the reader with a blueprint for what is to come in the paper

IMMIGRATION Illegal immigration adversely affects the economy of the United States. ALCOHOLISM Alcoholism has a severe economic impact on the healthcare system in California. FREE SPEECH The government shouldn't waste resources censoring the Internet.

Which sentence below is a thesis statement?


1 Gandhis method of non-violence in removing the imperialist powers from India was more effective than Maos method of violence in China. Gandhi used non-violent strategies to gain independence for India while Mao used violent strategies in his revolution in China. 2 Eight years of civil war have destroyed the economy and infrastructure in Liberia. After eight years of civil war, Liberia needs to focus on rebuilding its economy by investing in manufacturing and infrastructure development in order to keep the present peace.

Argumentative essay
makes a claim about a topic and justifies this claim with specific evidence
The claim could be an opinion, a policy proposal, an evaluation, a cause-and effect statement, or an interpretation. The goal of the argumentative paper is to convince the audience that the claim is true based on the evidence provided. argumentative thesis statement High school graduates should be required to take a year off to pursue community service projects before entering college in order to increase their maturity and global awareness.

How do I start writing a thesis statement?

Outline
shows how you are going to prove your thesis. shows the structure. key words and phrases are enough. the more detailed your outline is, though, the easier it will be for you to write the paper.

Present continuous
I am working You are working He/she/it is working we are working you are working they are working to express the idea that something is happening now, at this very moment: You are learning English now. to say that we are in the process of doing a longer action which is in progress; however, we might not be doing it at this exact second: Aren't you studying at the university now? to indicate that something will or will not happen in the near future: I am meeting some friends after work. expresses the idea that something irritating or shocking often happens. The meaning is like the simple present, but with negative emotion: I don't like them because they are always complaining. Never use the present continuous with words like love, like, hate

puts emphasis on the result Example: She has written five letters. action that is still going on Example: School has not started yet. finished action that has an influence on the present Example: I have lost my key. signal Words: already, ever, just, never, not yet, so far, till now, up to now An action that happened at an unspecified time before now. The exact time is not important. I have seen that movie twenty times. My English has really improved since I moved to Australia. She has been in England for six months. I went to Mexico last year. I have been to Mexico in the last year.
