Classification based on Degree of Involvement of Customers

In this type of classification , services are categorized based on the degree of involvement of the customer People Processing: In people processing the service is directed at the customer. For example: Schools, Healthcare centers, beauty saloons etc. Possession Processing: Customer does not require to be present. For Example: Car is to be left to service station for service.

Mental stimulus Processing: In this category the attention of the customer must be directed on the service in order to experience the service. For Example a person taking career councling from a professional counselor gets stimulated mentally to take the right decision or dvelop the right attitude.

Information Processing: This type of service requires service personnel to collect information, analyze it , interpret and offer appropriate advice to the client. For Example: Markete Research firm hired by a company collects information from customers.

Classification based on the service tangibility

Highly Tangible: In these services , the customer obtains a tangible product in hand, though it may sometimes last for only a small period of time. For Example, if a person takes a cell phone on rent, he obtains the tangible product that he can use for the period of contract. After the contract period is over the cell phone is returned to the service providor.

Service linked to tangible goods: Some organizations offer a warranty period to customers who purchase products from them. During this period they offer free service. For example Photocopying machine.

Tangible goods linked to services: Some services offer tangible product along with the service requested by the customer. e.g: airline services offer food and mgazines

Highly intangible: These are the services which do not provide customers with any tangible product. e.g: massage parlor

Classification based on skills and expertise required

Professional Services: These services require the service provider to be formally trained to deliver the service. The service rendered by a doctor, pilot are examples Non- professional services: These services do not require the service provider to undergo any training to deliver the service. E.g: baby sitting and housekeeping , these services can be rendered without the need for formal training.

Classification based on the business orientation of service provider

Not-for-profit organization: These are the services in which the main aim of the service provider is to serve the society and not to make profits. e.g: Gov. schools and social service organizations. Commercial organzations: These are the services where main objective is to earn revenues. Airlines, insurance firms, restaurants etc.

Classification based on the Type of End-user

Consumer Service: examples, beaty care, hair cutting etc. B2B Services: examples are market research, consultancy, advertising Industrial Services: These are based on contract between organizations and service providers. Machine installation and plant maintenance are some examples.
