THE ENVIRONMENT (PROTECTION) ACT, 1986

An Act to provide for the protection and improvement of environment and for matters connected therewith. Whereas the decisions were taken at the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held at Stockholm in June, 1972, in which India participated, to take appropriate steps for the protection and improvement of human environment.

Environment
Definition :-

(sec.2a):Environment it includes water, air and land and the inter relationship which exists between water, air and land and human being, other living creatures, plants, micro organisms and property.

Hazardous substance
It means any substance or preparation which, by reason of its chemical or physico-chemical properties or handling, is liable to cause harm to human beings, other living creatures,plant, micro-organism, property or the environment.

Occupier
In relation to any factory or premises, means a person who has,control over the affairs of the factory or the premises and includes in relation to any substance, the person in possession of the substance.

OBJECTIVES
To co-ordinate the activities of the various regulatory agencies already in existence. To appoint environment officers to check environmental pollution. To improve the quality of life by protection of environment. Establishing environmental laboratories. To protect the forests and wildlife in the country

Environmental Pollutants

Environment pollutant (sec.2 b):It means any solid, liquid or gaseous substance present in such concentration as may be, or tend to be injurious to environment.

Environment pollution

(sec.2c):-

It means the presence of any environmental pollutant in the environment. It includes all extraneous (forging) materials that are harmful to human being ,animals and plants life. .

Sound Pollution Man-made-noises-from machines automobiles, trains, planes, explosives and firecrackers, etc-are more contentious. Noise is an inescapable by-product of the industrial environment, which is increasing with advances in industrialization and urbanization. Air Pollution Modernization and progress have led to air getting more and more polluted over the years. The industries like thermal power plants, cement, steel, and mines are among these that emit a great deal of pollutants into the air.

Water pollution Most of todays cleaning products are synthetic detergents and come from the petrol chemical industries. These and other chemical contained in washing powder affect the health of all forms of life in the water. Soil pollution As our lifestyle is changing day by day, we are using plastic more and more,By the disposal of the industrial waste the fertility of the soil will decrease this lead to the soil pollution.

Sources and causes for the pollution

Pollution comes from both natural and man made sources. Though globally man made pollutants from Combustion, Construction, Mining, Agriculture, Warfare, Chemical plants, Coal-firedpower plants, Oil refineries, Petrochemicalplants,Nuclear waste, Large livestock farms (dairy cows, pigs, poultry, etc.), PVCfactories, Plastics factories and other heavy industry are increasingly significant

What is Global Warming?

Global Warming is defined as the increase of the average temperature on Earth. As the Earth is getting hotter, disasters like hurricanes, droughts and floods are getting more frequent.

How the GLOBAL WARMING will happens?

A combination of light and heat energy from the sun reaches Earth and warms the land, oceans and air. When Earths surface warms up, it radiates heat which rises towards the sky. A few gases in the atmosphere called the greenhouse gases (water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane etc.) absorb this heat and prevent it from escaping into space, thus warming happens.

Carbon Dioxide from Power Plants. Carbon Dioxide Emitted from Cars. Carbon Dioxide from Airplanes.

Procedure for handling hazardous substance (sec-8). Power to take sample and procedure (sec-11). Appointment of government analyst (sec-13). Penalty (sec-15). Duties of persons creating environmental pollution (sec-9).
