When one or more of the following situations occur whilst any person is aboard the aircraft:

an individual is killed or seriously injured the aircraft suffers damage or structural failure

When injuries come from:


natural causes self-infliction or inflicted by another person aboard the aircraft

Determining the cause(s) of the accident:


by using the collected information
putting it all together forming conclusions

Completing the final report:


gathering all the investigation data

suggesting safety recommendations putting it all in one official report

publishing the report

International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). o Main international organisation, based in Canada. o Wrote and published the Convention of International Civil Aviation (CICA) (including Annex 13). Under the CICA many other organisations are included, according to the countries that have ratified and signed the CICA.

In the UK we have the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB). This is the largest British organisation in the civil aviation sector, for the investigation of air accidents.

To propose improvement methods such as;


Better training for flight staff and aircraft mechanics
New procedures for flights and operations Infrastructure improvements Revising aircraft designs Integrating newer, more advanced technologies

All of these have the same main aim guiding them; To prevent similar accidents from happening in the future.

The main reason for conducting an air accident investigation is to prevent air accidents from happening in the future. Another important reason is in order to propose safety recommendations and thereby improve aviation safety.

To keep on improving aviation safety through air accident investigation, in order to reach a certain level where air accidents are almost ruled out.
