Creativity, Invention and Innovation

Creativity
Creativity is a mental process involving the generation of new ideas or concepts, or new associations of the creative mind between existing ideas or concepts. From a scientific point of view, the products of creative thought (sometimes referred to as divergent thoughts) are usually considered to have both originality and appropriateness. An everyday conception of creativity is that it is simply the act of making something new.

Innovation
The term innovation means a new way of doing something. It may refer to incremental, radical, and revolutionary changes in thinking, products, processes, or organizations. A distinction is typically made between Invention: an idea made manifest, and innovation: ideas applied successfully. (McKeown, 2008)

Invention
New solutions to technical problems
Invention means an idea of an inventor, which permits in practice the solution to a specific problem in the field of technology. WIPO(1979) Invention is needed for innovation to take place. But invention is not innovation.

Creativity and Innovation

Creativity is typically used to refer to the act of producing new ideas, approaches or actions, while innovation is the process of both generating and applying such creative ideas in some specific context. creativity is the generation of novel ideas by individuals or groups, as a necessary step within the innovation process. Amabile et al. (1996)
"...creativity is a starting point for innovation; the first is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the second."

Patents
Also called patents for invention as they characteristically protect inventions. A patent is an exclusive right granted by a country to the owner of an invention to make, use, manufacture and market the invention provided the invention satisfies certain conditions stipulated in the law

Exclusivity of right implies that no one else can make, use, manufacture or market the invention without the consent of the patent holder.
6

Innovation
In many companies, inventions that result in patents are considered innovations. These companies are often touted as innovative. Innovation is not complete until it shows up in the financial results. In fact there is no correlation between the number of corporate patents earned and financial success. Until people are willing to buy your product, pay for it, and then buy it again, there is no innovation.
7

Innovation
In many fields, something new must be substantially different to be innovative, not an insignificant change. In economics, the change must increase value, customer value, or producer value. The goal of innovation is positive change: to make someone or something better. Innovation leading to increased productivity is the fundamental source of increasing wealth in an economy. Thomas Edison said, Generating ideas is important, but its pointless unless there is a repeatable process in place to turn inspiration into financial performance.

Albert Einstein: You can never solve a problem on the level on which it was created. Creative problem solving is the mental process of creating a solution to a problem.

Creative problem solving always involves creativity. However, creativity often does not involve creative problem solving, especially in fields such as music, poetry, and art. Creativity requires newness or novelty as a characteristic of what is created, but creativity does not necessarily imply that what is created has value or is appreciated by 13 other people.

Creative problem solving

The solution must either have value, clearly solve the stated problem, or be appreciated by someone for whom the situation improves. If a created solution becomes widely used, the solution becomes an innovation. A widespread and long-lived innovation typically becomes a new tradition.

All innovations begin as creative solutions, but not all creative solutions become innovations.
