How Does an RO work ?

Has multiple stages of purification wherein different impurities (Physical , chemical etc) are removed at each stage The heart of the product are the filters of which the RO membrane is the most important Understanding RO Membrane
The RO membrane is spirally wound and is semi-permeable i.e has very tiny holes in it which 1/100th size of our hair or 0.0001 micron !!! Semi-permeable is anything that does not allow easy passing of a solution from one end to another Example : An eg yolk has a semi-permeable wall which does not allow the egg white to mix with the rest of the yolk Only when external pressure is applied on the membrane does it force water to pass through its tiny holes However all the impurities in water which are larger than the pore size stay behind

How Does RO work (Eg:WPL) ?

Feed water passes through the Pre-filter (outside the RO) and all the large impurities are removed.

Water then passes through the FLC , LPS & booster pump wherein its pressure gets boosted to as high as 70 psi. The high pressure water enters the Precarbon filter wherein the Chlorine & VOC are removed

Q. Is RO water required only for bore-well water?
A. Not necessarily . Bore-well water has higher quantities of Total Dissolved Salts & heavy metals and hence definitely requires an RO. However , even municipality treated water which is low on TDS is required to be treated with an RO for two reasons . First , it may contain high traces of chlorine which can only be removed by an RO and secondly the water post treatment is made to pass through rusted pipes & lead fixtures which do not increase the TDS count but are very dangerous for health. Q. Sometimes water after getting purified from an RO becomes a little bitter. Why does it

happen?
A. When water is made to pass through RO membrane , it reduces all the heavy metals & salts by up
to 95% . In areas where water has low TDS , the taste becomes bitter when the TDS count goes below 30 ppm. However , all dangerous impurities are removed from water. This water tastes like all packaged drinking water like Aquafina & Kinley etc whose TDS is as low as 10 ppm.

Q. Is UV the best technology for germs & bacteria and RO for removing TDS? A. UV technology only de-activates the bacteria & virus by passing UV rays into their cells , however
they get re-activated after a couple of hours. In RO the bacteria and virus are almost 1000 times bigger than the membrane pore size and hence cannot pass through and are removed. In WPL RO , due the 6th sense purify and protect technology they do not get re-activated post purification

Q. What is the technology in the pure-it, Aquasure type of products? How is RO better?
A. All these products use activated carbon along with a disinfectant like chlorine or bromine. The activated carbon has a property of absorbing physical and biological impurities from water and also it absorbs excess chlorine/bromine generated in water Q. Does RO remove all minerals from water? A. Yes RO does reduce minerals from water up to 95% . However it also removes deadly impurities like lead and arsenic. In low TDS areas the RO water tastes like all packaged drinking water like Aquafina & Kinley etc whose TDS is as low as 10 ppm.

Q. Lately Eureka has introduced low TDS options in their RO. Is it good? A. The RO membrane used in these products has an enlarged pore size of 0.001 micron instead of
the usual 0.0001 micron. As a result all heavy metals like lead , arsenic , mercury as well as radioactive materials whose size is 0.001 micron will be able to pass through it. This can cause serious health effects and the whole purpose of purchasing a technology like RO gets defeated

Q. Our membrane has is a 50 GPD Vs competitions 75 what is the benefit?
A. GPD is one of the 3 parameters which impact the flow rate of an RO. The other two are temperature & pressure. Any variation in any of the 3 will impact the flow rate . Hence when competition says that its flow rate is 12 or 15 ltrs per hour , It is only standard test conditions TEMP x PRESSURE x GPD = LPH Lately we have made improvements in the Pressure parameter and hence our Deluxe & Elite models now have an improved flow rate of 10.8 LPH

Q. At what Max TDS can our RO work A. Our RO can work at very high TDS ppm . However its performance ( TDS reduction)begins to come down beyond 2500 TDS. As a result we give a 10 month warranty upto 2500 ppm and 1 year upto 2000 TDS

Q. Why are there only 5 stages in platinum model? A. Platinum uses an advanced filter called Neo sense . It does the job of Plus sediment as well as
Pre-carbon thereby eliminating the need for an additional filter. Rest of the stages are the same as Deluxe & Elite

A. (1)Pressure : o The min pressure for Deluxe & Elite is 4 psi. On an avg 1 foot= 0.42 psi . Plt is 17 psi o Min height therefore required is 8-10 feet ( tank wrt to the product) (2) Water supply o Preferably it should be connected to a running water supply to avoid air entrapment (3) TDS o For a good performance of the product , the TDS should be in the range of 2000-2500 ppm
