HAPTIC INTERFACES

PRESENTED BY: RASHMI SINGLA M.sc(C.S)

What is haptics?

Originated from a Greek word Hepatesthai meaning to touch

What are haptic interfaces?

Interfaces which allows the users to interact with the computers with the help of their sense of touch in a virtual environment.

HUMAN SENSE OF TOUCH

Out of five human senses Sight, Sound, Smell, Touch and Taste- Sight, Sound and Touch convey the most information about an environment

The human sense of touch Tactile Information Kinesthetic Information

Tactile Information

Conveys the texture or roughness of the object the we are touching via mechanoreceptor cells located near the surface of the skin, highest density found in the hand Also conveys the Temperature of the object touched. Involves high frequency(about 300Hz) buzzing sensations applied directly to the skin

Kinesthetic Information

Related to sensing of forces Conveys the coarse properties, such as it's position in space, and whether the surfaces are deformable or springlike to touch. Achieved by receptors situated in muscles, tendons and joints Stimulus frequency is much lower, lying in the 0-10 Hz range

Why use haptics?

Increases the information flow between the computer and the user. Our sensing of forces is closely tied to our visual system and sense of three-dimensional space Information and intent can be conveyed in a physically direct and primal way

PHANTOM- A Practical Haptic Interface

PHANToM (Personal Haptic Interface Mechanism) Developed by J K Salisbury and Thomas Massie of SensAble Technologies Inc. An interface that lets you feel virtual objects with a finger tip.

PHANTOM- A Practical Haptic Interface

like a small desk lamp and has a stylus grip or fingertip thimble which provides force feedback between virtual objects and the user.

allows motion along six degrees of freedom

can provide controllable forces along 3 of those freedoms with a maximum exertable force of about 8.5 Newtons

Haptic interaction

Haptic Applications(1)

Medicine

Surgical simulators for training

Manipulating robots for minimally invasive surgery Telemedicine, remote diagnosis Accessibility for the disabled

10

Haptic Applications (2)

Entertainment

Video games, simulators that enable the user to feel and manipulate objects in the environment

Arts
Virtual painting, sculpting Virtual musical instruments

11

Challenges

Detect all surface contact instead of just at a single point

Calculate a reaction force and torque at every point or region of contact

Providing Temperature Feedback.

12

Challenges

Multi Fingered Haptic devices

Multiple Phantom devices working in tandem Their coordination is yet to be achieved.
