Input device is any peripheral (piece of computer hardware equipments) used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system such as computer or other information appliances.

A barcode reader is an electronic device for reading printed barcodes like a flatbed scanner, it consist of a light source, a lens and a light sensor translating optical impulses into electrical ones. It is also called a price scanner or point of sale. It is used in library registration for using books/magazines.

A paddle is an input device commonly used with games that may contain various buttons used to star and utilize different options in a game. All console game systems utilize a paddle or a game pad for control.

Touchpad is a pointing device featuring a tactile sensor a specialized surface that can translate the motion and position of a users fingers to a relative motion on screen. Touchpad are a common feature of laptop computers and are also used as a substitute for a mouse.

A joystick is a pointing device often used for playing games. It has a gearshift like lever that is used to move the pointer on the screen. On most joysticks a button on the top is used to select an option. In industry and manufacturing joysticks are used to control robots.

It is an electronic musical instrument industry specification that enables a wide variety of digital musical instruments computer. MIDI carries note event messages that specify notation, pitch, velocity, control signals that set synchronize tempo between multiple devices. MIDI technology was standardized by a panel of music industry representative and is maintained by MIDI Manufacturing Association.

An interactive whiteboard is a large interactive display that connects to a computer and projector. A projector protects the computers desktop on to the board. The board is typically mounted to a wall or floor stand. They are used in a variety of settings including classrooms at all levels of education in corporate board rooms, in training rooms, for professional sports coaching , in broadcasting studies.

A magnetic card reader is a device that can retrieve stored information from a magnetic card either by holding the card next to the device or swiping the card through a slot in the device.

A webcam is a video camera that feeds its images in real time to a computer or computer network, often via USB, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi. Their most popular use is the establishment of video links, permitting computers to act as videophones or videoconference stations. The common use as a video camera for the World Wide Web gave the webcam its name. Other popular uses include security surveillance, computer vision, video broadcasting, and for recording social videos.

Hardware input device that allows a user to take an image or text and convert it into a digital file, allowing the computer to read or display the scanned object. A scanner is commonly connected to a computer USB.

A microphone (colloquially called a mic or mike; both pronounced) is an acoustic-to-electric transducer or sensor that converts sound into an electrical signal. Microphones are used in many applications such as telephones, tape recorders, karaoke systems.

A light pen, also called a selector pen, is a computer input device in the form of a lightsensitive wand used in conjunction with a computer's CRT display. It allows the user to point to displayed objects or draw on the screen in a similar way to a touch screen but with greater positional accuracy.

Headsets are a combination of an earphone and a microphone. Combined with voice-recognition software, headsets allow you to dictate data and commands directly into other software programs on your computer. Using a headset means you can keep your hands free for other tasks while using your computer.

Video capture

hardware hooks up to your TV and allows you to copy TV programs directly into your computer, such as a digital video recorder. Once stored, you can edit the video files just like your own home videos. Video capture requires a great deal of storage space and a fast computer.

When referring to computer hardware, a fingerprint scanner or fingerprint reader is a hardware device that verifies a user or enters password information by scanning their finger. In the picture to the right, is an example of a fingerprint scanner by Microsoft.

Similar to other computer scanners, a business card reader allows a user to scan business cards into their computer for digital storage. Computer scanners are capable of scanning and converting text documents to typed text by use of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. Business card readers work on a similar principle, reading the text on the business card and converting to typed text on the computer. Some business card readers offer the functionality of scanning a business card directly into a Microsoft Outlook contact record.

A touch screen is a computer screen or other screen that you can touch with your finger to enter information. Examples of touch screens include a smart board, a microwave, a dishwasher, or an ATM at a bank.
