Les Sprays
Priority: Promoting balanced spatial development Measure: Co-operation to develop research and cross-border technology transfer.
Objectives
1. To forge collaboration in research focused on spray modelling and applications, using the expertise of French and British scientists for the benefit of the local community.
2. To develop a new computational technology for spray formation and dynamics by combining the expertise in this field at the University of Brighton and the University of Rouen. 3. To apply this new technology for optimising fluid dynamics, heat transfer and combustion processes in internal combustion engines, using facilities and expertise of French and British partners. 4. To investigate the range of applicability of the proposed approach to solve other engineering and environmental problems in France and Britain. One of these applications may be related to fire engineering .
To forge collaboration in research focused on spray modelling and applications, using the expertise of French and British scientists for the benefit of the local community.
Exchange visits by participants (S (Martynov, A Chtab, E Sazhina, J Juanguy, M Gorokhovskii, S Sazhin) Three joint presentations at international research conferences. Two joint papers will be submitted to International Refereed Journals A joint presentation at the INTERREG Showcase Event, 1 March 2006, Ashford
To develop a new computational technology for spray formation and dynamics by combining the expertise in this field at the University of Brighton and the University of Rouen
Development of a new spray break-up model taking into account transient effects (a paper will be submitted to Int J Heat and Fluid Flow) Development of a new model of spray dynamics and ignition in a Diesel engine-like environment (a paper will be submitted to Combustion and Flame) Development of a new Centre-of-Mass model for spray penetration (a paper will be submitted to Fuel) The results have been presented at several International Research Conferences
To apply this new technology for optimising fluid dynamics, heat transfer and combustion processes in internal combustion engines, using facilities and expertise of French and British partners
The models have been directly applied to modelling fluid dynamics, heat transfer and combustion processes in Diesel engines (see the above mentioned papers) The models have been validated against in-house experimental data referring to a Diesel engine-like environment The results have been presented at three specialised automotive research conferences (Spain, September 2006; South Africa, January 2007; Poland, May 2007)
To investigate the range of applicability of the proposed approach to solve other engineering and environmental problems in France and Britain. One of these applications may be related to fire engineering
The models are expected to have a wide range of possible applications Some models have been applied to ethanol and acetone sprays, and the results have been validated against experimental data obtained LEMTA-CNRS UMR, Nancy, France (a joint paper has been submitted for publication to Int J Heat Mass Transfer)
Actions envisaged
Review of currently available models of liquid spray formation (done, see the review). Development of a new model of liquid spray formation in the conditions relevant to direct injection internal combustion engines. Theoretical and numerical analysis of the influence of physical parameters on the distribution function of droplets by radii (done, see our journal papers and conference presentations). Development of a new model of droplets dispersion taking into account the effect of turbulence at the droplet level. The results obtained during this period will be reported in at least one paper to be submitted to an international refereed journal, and at least one international conference (done, see our journal papers and conference presentations).
Actions envisaged
Implementation of the new models into a numerical code (e.g. KIVA) (done, the model has been implemented into a customised version of the KIVA-2 CFD code, see our journal papers and conference presentations). Numerical analysis of physical and chemical phenomena in direct injection internal combustion engines with a view of optimising their performance and reduction of pollutants (done, see our journal papers and conference presentations). Investigation of the applicability of the new models to analysis of other sprays (e.g. environmental sprays and sprays used in fire engineering). The results obtained during the second year will be reported in at least two papers to be submitted to international refereed journals, and at least one international conference (done, see our journal papers and conference presentations).
The project will enable closer communication between British and French groups, which is likely to lead to wider cross-border research collaboration (a new collaboration between the University of Brighton and a research centre in Nancy has been established). Results of the development of the project are likely to be used by cross-border engineering and environmental communities. Possible application of the results of the project in the analysis of medical and other types of sprays is expected (a joint paper with colleagues from the research centre in Nancy, France has been submitted for publication to Int J Heat Mass Transfer)
EPSRC Project Ref: EP/E02243X/1 (A kinetic algorithm for modelling the droplet evaporation process in the presence of a heat flux and background gas) (Dr I Shishkova, Moscow, Russia) EPSRC Project Ref: EP/E047912/1 (Vortex rings in gasoline fuel sprays) (Dr Kaplanski, Tallinn, Estonia) Grants from the British Councils (India, Israel) Several grant applications are pending (Royal Society, Leverhulme Visiting Professorships, EPSRC)
The project results have been presented at prestigious international research conferences (see list of our conference reports). The results of the project have been presented at several nonacademic conferences and meetings, including INTERREG Showcase event, 1 March 2006; House of Commons, 13 March 2006; KTP conference in Brighton, 10-12 September 2006, opening of Sir Harry Ricardo Laboratories at the University of Brighton, 14 November 2007, Brighton Science and Engineering Fair, University of Brighton, 14 March 2007 . Numerous publications in refereed international journals and conference proceedings.
See the grants which have been awarded and pending applications. Collaboration with the modelling group at Delphi Diesel System Ltd. Any other suggestions from local industry would be welcomed
