Case Study The AtekPC Project Management Office

Ready?

Q1: What is the purpose and mission of a PMO?

To realize/bring forward the benefits of consistent project

practices in front of the remaining organizational members. To provide standardization in managing large and complex projects to improve the planning and performance of initiatives. To improve the efficient use of management skills, processes, and authority with large and complex projects. Two missions:
new products.

cost reduction to become more creative, adaptive, and agile in launching

Duties of PMO

Project focused Enterprise oriented

Q 2: What are the main challenges and obstacles in implementing a PMO?

Implementation of PMO is a very important and critical task. Obstacles are lack of standardization and perception management. PMO as a burden for management. They used to think that it will reduce their productivity or pace of

work. If the management tries to implement PMO rigidly in the organization then PMO will fail badly because the management wouldnt support it. It becomes very difficult to forecast the exact amount of resources required for the implementation of PMO. Another challenge that is faced in the implementation of a PMO is to select the right implementation approach.

Q 3: What structure and governance mechanisms are critical for effective PMO implementation?
Misconception that PMO is a magic wand. Actually it is a culture which should be hatched in the

organization or otherwise it will fail to achieve its desired objectives. In the success of any given department or organization the role of its leader is inevitable. PMO should be mentored by a person of high capabilities and post in the organization such as Vice president. There are two organizational models available for the PMO
PMO-heavy and PMO-light.

PMO-heavy: the core focus is on the acquisition of project

management experts from internal and external sources. PMO-light: staff of experts work through internal project managers to perform responsibilities of the PMO. The main focus is on the developing the skills of internal project managers.

Q 4: How much PM is enough PM and how much PMO support is enough PMO support?
Enough if it will start to meet all the goals and benefits associated

with it.

For this, PMO support is inevitable.

PMO does not only create awareness and training sessions with in

the company.

It also guides management about the tools and techniques through which the company can practice PM successfully in their organization. in minimum time and cost then the company is achieving its goal.

If the company is providing its customers with best quality product For example, the IT staff of the AteckPC was not working within

their specified budget and because of that the cost of their products was high.

By implementing PMO, the company can avoid all the extra costs which will obviously benefit them in gaining higher profits and market share.
